The United Nations stressed that the mission of COP30 is to turn promises into action and agree on clearer, stronger plans to cut emissions.
In an article on the UN News website, the United Nations stated: After decades of commitments, the planet is still warming and the pressure is greater than ever on governments and businesses to act, not just pledge. Therefore, this year's round of negotiations focuses on reviewing national climate plans, promoting the $1.3 trillion a year in climate finance, adopting new measures to help countries adapt and promoting a just transition to cleaner economies .
Another focus at Belem was national climate plans under the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) mechanism. To keep global warming below 1.5°C, global emissions must fall by 60% by 2030, while current NDC commitments only meet the 10% reduction target. Of the 196 parties to the Paris Agreement on climate change (2015), only 64 had submitted NDCs as of the end of September.
Meanwhile, scientists warn that the Earth is on track to exceed the 1.5 ° C temperature limit above pre-industrial levels. 2025 is predicted to be the second or third hottest year on record.
