Phanom Rung Temple with spectacular sunset attracts domestic and international tourists

Typhoon Yagi did not make direct landfall in Thailand. However, its circulation caused heavy rain and flooding in 48 provinces and cities in the country, according to the Bangkok Post.

Despite the bad weather, in Buri Ram town, about 200 domestic and international tourists still gathered at the Phanom Rung historical site from 6am to "hunt" for the sunrise shining simultaneously through 15 gates at the temples.

Of course, the overcast sky did not yield the expected results. However, visitors said they were happy to visit and pray at the temple that has existed for 9 centuries.

Under favorable conditions, the sunrise shining directly through the 15 gates at Phanom Rung Temple only happens twice a year, including early April and September. For similar sunset phenomena, visitors will be able to admire them in early March and October.

Wanpen Kumram, a tourist from Surin province, Thailand, visited the site with her New Zealand husband. The couple hoped to see the "extraordinary" sunrise a second time, but had to return home due to bad weather.

Pakpoom Yupol, director of Phanom Rung Historical Park, said Sunday 8 September is the first of three days when the ideal sunrise phenomenon can occur. In addition, visitors will pray to the saints at the temple.

Phanom Rung is a Thai royal temple made of laterite and sandstone with stone-paved paths. This monument was built after Phimai Historical Park (Nakhon Ratchasima Province) and Angkor Wat (Cambodia). Therefore, many experts believe that the design of Phanom Rung has the influence of the above two works. The entrance fee is 40 baht/person, equivalent to about 29,000 VND.

Like many other religious buildings, visitors must dress politely, discreetly, and maintain order when visiting Phanom Rung.
