VnExpressVnExpress20/05/2023

Hanoi To win 149 social housing spots at the NHS Trung Van project, more than 1,300 low-income people had to draw lots to choose, on the morning of May 20.

The check-in process only started at 7am, but many customers had been at Cau Giay District Stadium since early morning, some as early as 4am. Security guards were stationed at the entrance to prevent those without lottery tickets from entering or leaving. Outside, both sides of the sidewalk and the roadside of Tran Quy Kien Street were packed with motorbikes and cars. Many people stood outside waiting for their loved ones under the sun, which was over 37 degrees Celsius.

To facilitate the drawing, the project investor arranged 19 tables and there was always a functional force to supervise. Each drawing group was divided into 10 people, moving into a separate room, then opening the envelope in the ballot box to see if they won or lost. Each person was only allowed to draw lots once.

At around 11:30 a.m., Nguyen Quang Huong, 31, from Chuong My district, left the stadium with a happy face. "I still can't believe I won when I look at the competition rate of nearly 1/9," he said. Seeing the line of people waiting for a number to enter the lottery, he thought his chances were very slim.

Also among the lucky people who won the nearly 70 square meter apartment, Can Thanh Lam, 28 years old, from Thach That district, said: "When I opened the envelope and found out I won, my hands were shaking, I felt suffocated."

Mr. Lam got married more than 4 years ago, has two young children and lives with his parents in the countryside. When the project started accepting applications, a neighbor invited him to apply. "Not only did I win, but my neighbor also won," Mr. Lam said, adding that he had prepared money to pay the project owner when requested.

Ms. Truong Thanh Xuan, 30 years old, from Ha Dong district, compared the journey of buying social housing to playing the lottery. When she won an apartment of more than 70 square meters, she screamed loudly in the middle of the gym. "The feeling is hard to describe, from excitement to overwhelming," she shared.

Along with the joy, many people left the lottery drawing place this afternoon with sad faces. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung, 32 years old, in Ha Dong district, said: "I waited to submit my application and then sat for hours waiting for the lottery drawing, now I feel disappointed because I failed to get the lottery drawing". Mr. Trung said he will continue to submit applications to buy social housing in other projects.
