On October 15, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long signed Decision No. 1189/QD-TTg approving the Strategy for the development of Vietnam's physical training and sports until 2030, with a vision to 2045. In which, Vietnamese men's football strives to be in the top 8 in Asia and qualify for the World Cup.
Vietnam women's football is in the top 6 in Asia (currently ranked 6th in the continent according to the latest FIFA rankings) and has qualified for the World Cup. High-performance sports regularly maintain top 2 positions at the SEA Games, top 15 at the ASIAD and top 50 at the Olympics.
The Vietnam team aims to attend the World Cup.
Recently, the Vietnamese men's football team has been able to participate in the third qualifying round of the World Cup in Asia, and has regularly achieved success at the Asian Cup. At this time, under the leadership of coach Kim Sang-sik, the VFF has set a goal for the Vietnamese team to reach the AFF Cup finals and qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup. Youth teams must have tickets to the continental tournament.
In addition, the strategy emphasizes the development of community sports among all classes of people. The strategy sets out the key tasks and solutions of innovating and improving the quality of the Campaign "All people practice physical exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho" and effectively integrating it with related strategies, programs, projects and movements, aiming for each person to regularly practice at least one sport suitable to the specific characteristics and conditions of the individual.
Decision No. 1189/QD-TTg clearly states: " The general goal of the Strategy is to build a sustainable and professional physical education and sports development. All people have access to and enjoy physical education and sports services; voluntarily practice to improve health, fitness and quality of life. Improve the achievements of Vietnamese sports, gradually approaching and advancing to the level of countries with developed sports in Asia. Expand the sports market, mobilize and effectively use resources in developing the physical education and sports career.
The strategy sets the goal that by 2045, the physical education and sports movement will develop evenly and diversely among subjects and localities; forming the habit of regular physical exercise among the people; over 95% of students, university students, and armed forces soldiers will meet physical training standards; the stature of Vietnamese youth will reach a high level in the region .
In terms of infrastructure construction, 50% of provinces and centrally-run cities have 3 basic sports facilities meeting international competition organization standards; 100% of district-level administrative units have 3 basic sports facilities meeting prescribed criteria and standards; 100% of commune-level administrative units have sports facilities; 100% of schools in the generaleducation system have sports facilities. The national sports facilities network is modern and qualified to host the ASIAD.
The sports market is developing, the sports economy has achieved high annual growth, gradually contributing positively to the country's economic development.
