Nude photo wins national excellence award 2025

The Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists has just announced the 2025 National Excellence Awards for the category of Critical Theory & Photo Books. In which, the photo book on the topic of nude yoga art called Sunshine Behind the Curtain by photographer Thai Phien won the highest award.

Sharing about this award, Thai Phien said that when he heard the good news, the first thing he thought of was not personal joy, but the sweat, tears and painful grimaces of the female models in this book.

Behind the 133 works in the book are rigorous training, long nights of pain, and the courage to overcome shyness and hesitation when undressing, to devote oneself completely to yoga and art.

“They are not just models. They are top yoga warriors who have overcome their physical limits to create unique, beautiful and… dangerous asanas in front of the camera. Therefore, they are great yoga ambassadors. I am sincerely grateful to these 15 brave female yoga instructors. Their physical beauty, soul and sacrifice are the endless source of inspiration that created the work Sunshine Behind the Curtain ,” Thai Phien shared.

To create this photo book, Thai Phien said he had the idea of ​​nude yoga art during the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, the community was aware of the importance of maintaining an optimistic spirit and exercising to cope with all difficulties. As a yoga lover, Thai Phien was very passionate about the beauty of women's bodies through flexible and soft yoga poses.

However, capturing that beauty through the lens is a challenging journey. There are countless talented yoga photographers in the world . Therefore, creating new poses is not easy. During the process, Thai Phien focused on transforming the basic poses, expressing the subtle beauty of yoga through his own perspective. Each photo aims to contain a story, a unique emotion.

Thai Phien said: “This is a way for me to record peaceful moments of yoga practitioners during these dark and turbulent days. The sunlight filters through the curtains, illuminating every corner of the room, bringing hope and belief in a brighter future. And this is not only a photo book but also a message about optimism and the extraordinary strength of people in the face of adversity.”
