Having impressed tourists with giant paintings on Tam Coc rice fields such as carp watching the moon, flags, etc., this year Ninh Binh "played big" with a re-enactment of childhood with the image of a buffalo boy playing the flute.
This rice field artwork was inspired by the Dong Ho folk painting of a shepherd playing the flute, one of the famous paintings imbued with the colors of the ancient Northern Delta.
Tam Coc rice field is one of the five most beautiful rice fields in Vietnam, poetically located along the winding Ngo Dong River. This field has an area of over 18 hectares.
Every year, at the end of May and the beginning of June, Tam Coc rice fields put on a new look, attracting the attention of tourists.
The rice variety used to create the painting of a shepherd playing the flute in Tam Coc is Thai Xuyen 111, which has the characteristics of being hardy, resistant to pests and diseases, and suitable for the soil here.
Right from the beginning of the year, the organizers and the people have prepared from tilling the land, sketching the picture and planting the rice. The difficulty is that the picture of "a shepherd playing the flute" has many complicated details such as eyes, nose, mouth, etc. After planting the rice, the people have to continue to edit to create a complete work.
Mr. Hoang Thanh Phong - Tam Coc Tourist Area Management Board - said that the rice planting time is the key to creating the details of the painting. The background will be planted at the same time as the local rice fields, while the prominent details will be planted a month later.
"In the rice fields there are only two colors: green and yellow. We want to use only those two colors to create an artistic picture to create the most beautiful rice field in Vietnam, while also honoring the beauty of rice plants.
We chose the painting of "a shepherd playing the flute". This is a familiar image from the childhood of many Vietnamese people. The painting has a peaceful beauty to pray for favorable weather, bountiful crops, more jobs for the people, and especially to attract tourists", Mr. Phong shared.
The image of a boy sitting on a buffalo's back playing the flute, with a lotus leaf on his head, the buffalo listening, surrounded by grass and trees, the vast sky and earth shows the desire to be in harmony with nature to have favorable conditions for the crop to grow and produce well.
Besides, all of these images evoke a nostalgic childhood with the days of herding buffaloes across the fields.
The painting of a shepherd playing the flute in the Tam Coc rice fields is one of the highlights of Ninh Binh Tourism Week "The Golden Color of Tam Coc - Trang An 2024".
The week will take place from June 1 to June 8 with many special activities. The opening ceremony will be held at 8pm on June 1 at Dong Gung bus station, Tam Coc - Bich Dong tourist area.
