Thung village currently has 226 households with over 1,100 people. The whole village has 690 hectares of cultivated land. Thung people have boldly changed the structure of crops and livestock, from monoculture of corn and upland rice, to now have over 200 hectares of cassava, 35 hectares of sugarcane, more than 400 hectares of forestry and other crops... Thanks to knowing how to apply science and technology to cultivation and livestock, crop and livestock productivity is increasing, people's lives are developing every day.
Elevate your life
Following the introduction of Mr. Le Van Sang, Vice Chairman of Duc Binh Dong Commune People's Committee, we went to Thung village to learn about life since the people here moved to the new resettlement area, making way for the Song Hinh hydroelectric reservoir project to store water in 1998.
Mr. Ma Cuoi, the village elder of Thung village, said: Thung village has existed for a long time. In the past, people lived in the area of the current Song Hinh hydroelectric reservoir. The village had only a few dozen families and their lives were poor. When the Song Hinh hydroelectric reservoir project was implemented in 1998, the State relocated and resettled Thung village to higher ground near the hydroelectric reservoir. Thanks to the care and attention of the Party and the State, the lives of the people of Thung village have increasingly developed.
Mr. Kpa Y Thuong, Head of Thung village, shared: Thung village has 80% of the population being Ede ethnic group, the rest being Kinh, Muong, Dao, Tay ethnic groups. Since moving to a new place in 1998, we are very happy that the rural infrastructure system in Thung village has been invested in. The intra-village roads that were previously rough and muddy are now asphalted or concreted, making travel more convenient. These roads have promoted the trade of goods between Thung village and neighboring areas, opening up opportunities to sell agricultural products directly, reducing transportation costs, and making it convenient for students to go to school and people to access medical services...
Thung Village has undergone a comprehensive transformation: from infrastructure, economic model, community culture, to policies... creating a clear change in this remote village.
Mr. Le Van Sang, Vice Chairman of Duc Binh Dong Commune People's Committee
Through confiding with Mr. Nie Y Bu, Deputy Head of Thung village, we learned that the economic income of the local people here mainly comes from main crops such as: Acacia, sugarcane, rubber and cassava. For acacia, each household earns from 70-80 million VND/ha, and for sugarcane, each crop, people earn from 40-50 million VND/ha... With improved income, people in the village have been able to buy many valuable means of production and living such as motorbikes, televisions, internet connections...
Mr. Kpa Y Ken's family has over 3 hectares of rubber and 1.5 hectares of cassava and happily said: "Thanks to the fertile land, the government's support in seeds and guidance on farming techniques, every crop season, we have a good income, our lives are increasingly improved, and our children can study properly."
Future aspirations
What surprised us when we arrived at Thung village was that the houses of the people here have been “Kinh-ized”, the traditional stilt houses are very rare. Talking to the people, we learned that in order to stop the exploitation of forests for wood to build stilt houses, the people of Thung village have now built spacious level 4 houses.
Mr. Trieu Van Cuong (Dao ethnic group) settled in Thung village since 2001, received support to build a new house under the province's temporary and dilapidated house elimination program, confided: "I am very happy to receive financial support and working days from the Party, State and local authorities to help my family build a new, spacious house. I believe that my family's life will develop more in the future."
Thung village head Kpa Y Thuong boasted to us: Currently, Thung village has 4 students studying at universities in Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. There are 21 students studying at high school level; 39 students studying at middle school level and 115 students studying at primary school level. These are factors contributing to the development of Thung village in the future. Also according to Mr. Kpa Y Thuong, Thung village currently has the Phu Yen 2 high-tech pig farm project invested by BAF Vietnam Agriculture Joint Stock Company, built on 24 hectares at the end of the village, started in October 2023, and has completed more than 70% of the construction. Hopefully, in the near future, people will benefit from this project.
Ms. Le Mo Ho Doan, an Ede ethnic, who was born and raised in Thung village, confided: “Thung village is now different from before, life has developed. My family has renovated the land behind the house to grow fruit trees, and at the same time renovated the traditional stilt house to be more spacious to welcome tourists when they come to Thung village.”
