Phu Yen - a land located in the middle of the Central region, where the blue sea caresses the long stretches of white sand. That is where there is the strange Da Dia reef like a ladder to heaven, there is Mui Dien welcoming the first sunrise on the mainland of the Fatherland, there is O Loan lagoon with immense waves every evening. All of them seem to whisper about the homeland where I was born and raised.
When I was young, I often heard my father tell stories about the time he walked across Ca Pass, when the road had not been widened and there was no tunnel through the pass like today. Despite the difficulties, everyone was proud to be born and raised in Phu Yen - where the people were gentle, simple and full of affection. Phu Yen people are not flashy or fussy, but imbued in every gesture is kindness, simplicity, "love others as you love yourself".
Whenever I go somewhere outside Phu Yen province, just hearing someone say “day huh”, “day na”, “day nghen”… I suddenly think “Ah…there are also people from my hometown Phu Yen here!” That accent is not just a language, but the soul of a land - a place where “love” is not just an emotion but also a way of life.
Even though Phu Yen has merged with Dak Lak , it cannot erase the deep impressions in the hearts of many generations of Phu Yen people. The name may change, the map may change, but the two words Phu Yen will still live forever in the present life.
Love for one’s homeland does not need to be too great. Sometimes it is just a glance back when leaving the countryside, a piece of banh it la gai brought along when going to the city, a folk song echoing across the fields at dusk. And it is in these simple things that the two words Phu Yen appear, gentle yet profound, close yet sacred.
Phu Yen may no longer be an independent administrative unit, but in the minds of every child here, Phu Yen is forever the homeland, the memory, an inseparable part of flesh and blood. Even though later, children may be born and raised in other lands, as long as we remember and tell them about Phu Yen, this land will live forever in people's hearts - peaceful, quiet, but imbued with the love of the homeland.
Even though the name has changed and the name has been integrated into new administrative units, the name Phu Yen still remains in me - like a part of my flesh and blood, like my mother's lullaby when I was in the cradle. That name is not just a place name, but also a dear memory that cannot be replaced.
