Remembering the past, black goby fish swam densely in the rivers in the Southwest region but were often ignored, now farmers in the coastal area of Can Gio district (HCMC) have successfully raised and sold goby fish for 100,000-120,000 VND/kg.
At the recent Conference to summarize the work of the Association and Farmers' Movement in Can Gio District (HCMC) in 2024 and deploy key tasks in 2025, Mr. Dang Van Ut, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Can Gio District, said that the Farmers' Association of the district is implementing a model of raising goby fish for 7 households in the area.

Mr. Ut was the first person to bring the goby fish breed from the West to raise in the coastal area of Can Gio. Currently, Mr. Ut is raising goby fish industrially.
From Mr. Ut's got fish farming model, the District Farmers' Association has expanded it to farmers.
Seven poor households have been supported to raise goby fish, creating conditions for economic development. Accordingly, each household is supported with about 20 kg of goby fish that are in the process of hatching eggs.
An Vo Thanh Long, a household that has been supported in raising goby fish, said that his family was supported with breeds and techniques to raise goby fish. Raising goby fish has improved his family's life for the better.
According to Mr. Ut, goby fish are easy-going pets, easily adaptable to water environments, and do not require much care techniques.
The ideal pond for raising goby fish is 1,000 - 2,000 m2 . Raising goby fish to reproduce will not produce the same number of offspring, so it is best to have 2 ponds to select the large ones to sell first, and the small ones to transfer to the other pond to continue raising. And keep raising them in rotation.

Caring for the fish is also simpler and less labor-intensive than other types of fish. Just feed them enough meals, change the water, and supply water regularly to ensure a clean water environment.
Ensuring the above will help the fish grow better, limiting the occurrence of diseases during the farming process. The fish can grow in areas with salinity of 3 - 15‰, pH 75 - 80...
The condition for raising goby fish is to manage the water environment. Goby fish can be harvested after 7 months of raising.
The fish weight is now about 30 fish/kg. Harvesting the fish is relatively difficult. Each time harvesting, the farmer drains the water in the pond, leaving about 4cm of water.
The juvenile goby fish (egg goby fish) are only stocked once and the fish will reproduce on their own. A mother goby fish gives birth to about 1,000 baby fish. The survival rate of the juvenile goby fish is about 96%.

Currently, there are 2 products in the goby fish farming industry: goby fish meat and goby fish eggs. The price of goby fish meat at the pond is 100,000 - 120,000 VND/kg.
On the market, the price of goby fish is 150,000 - 160,000 VND/kg. Usually, goby fish that reach a large size of 20 - 25 fish/kg will sell for a higher price. At Mr. Ut's goby fish farm, goby fish meat has been canned.
Mr. Ut said that raising goby fish not only helps farmers improve their family economy, but also helps local workers have more jobs with significant income from processing goby fish.

According to the Can Gio District Farmers' Association, An Thoi Dong commune is located in two large rivers, Soai Rap and Long Tau, along with a system of surrounding rivers and canals, such as Dan Xay River, Dinh Ba River, Lo Ren River, Vam Sat River, An Nghia River, Kho Mam River... and the forest cover area is favorable for raising aquatic species, including goby fish.
The Association will continue to replicate the model of raising goby fish in phase 1 combined with the transfer of phase 2 of the effective form of reproducing offspring from mother goby fish to eggs for farmer members in the area in the following years.
"This is an effective production model, suitable for local conditions. The Can Gio District Farmers' Association will transfer the effective model of raising goby fish, thereby helping farmer members sustainably reduce poverty," Mr. Ut shared.
