Recently, the medical team at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital welcomed a pair of special twins – two baby boys born by cesarean section still in their amniotic sacs, also known as "birth by amniotic sac", a rare phenomenon in modern obstetrics.
32-year-old woman, residing in Quang Ninh, got pregnant by IVF in vitro fertilization (IVF). The pregnancy was closely monitored, and at 35 weeks and three days, she was scheduled for an elective cesarean section.
The surgical team led by specialist II Dr. Do Duy Long - Deputy Director of the Hospital, along with doctors, nurses and technicians, successfully performed the birth.

After birth, the health of mother and baby was stable. The two babies were placed skin-to-skin with their mother right in the operating room to help stabilize their body temperature, heart rate and create an early bond after birth.
The special thing about this birth is that the amniotic sacs of both babies did not rupture during the cesarean section – a rare occurrence, even with cesarean sections. Normally, the amniotic sacs rupture on their own due to contractions. uterine contractions in the process labor or cut during cesarean section. According to medical literature, the rate of birth with the amniotic sac intact only occurs about 1/80,000 births, even rarer with twins.
According to medical experts, amniotic sac birth is not dangerous if treated promptly, on the contrary, it can help the fetus avoid trauma during birth. The intact amniotic sac helps the baby to be protected until the last moments in the sterile environment of amniotic fluid.
In medical terms, an en caul birth is called a “caul birth” – which usually occurs when the amniotic sac does not rupture during labor or a cesarean section. This is not an obstetric complication, but requires an experienced medical team to handle it quickly, ensuring the safety of the newborn.
According to folk beliefs, babies born in a red pouch are believed to be lucky, have a noble appearance, and are specially protected from the time they are in their mother's womb.
