UN human rights experts have highlighted the contradictions in the response of Western countries to the conflict in Gaza compared to Russia’s offensive in Ukraine. They point out that countries such as the US and the UK have taken a stronger stance in condemning Russia, while continuing to support Israel despite allegations of serious human rights violations in Gaza.

Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), said many countries not only failed to act but also supported Israel in activities she considered criminal.
Francesca Albanese also questioned Israel’s membership in the United Nations, claiming that Israel “disrespects” the organization by repeatedly attacking UN facilities in Gaza, both verbally and militarily . She also pointed out that some Gulf states and others also have a role in supporting Israel.
The UN's independent experts stressed that their views did not reflect the organization's official position, but their remarks drew criticism, particularly from Israel.
The Israeli Permanent Mission in Geneva has said Albanese is unfit for any position at the United Nations, saying her statements contain “anti-Semitic sentiments.” A US ambassador in Geneva has also criticized her past comments on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
