Ever since Apple switched to USB-C on its new devices, loyal users of the company's products have been faced with a reality: A drawer full of old Lightning cables that no longer get used regularly.
If you throw these old charging cables in the trash, you may be contributing to the problem of electronic waste, which is harmful to the environment. Meanwhile, old Lightning cables still have many uses if you know how.

Recycle properly
Old Lightning cables contain copper, aluminum, and plastic... materials that can be recovered and recycled effectively.
One of the easiest ways is to join Apple’s free recycling program. You can bring your old cable (along with other Apple accessories like chargers, cases, headphones, etc.) to an Apple Store (if available) or visit Apple’s website to request a prepaid shipping label, then mail it in for recycling at no cost.
Give or donate to those in need
Don't forget that Lightning cables are still popular. Many people still use older iPhone models (like the iPhone 14, 13, SE) and accessories that work with this port.
Give your good cables to your friends and family first. If not, you can look for recycling groups on social media or contact charities and STEM education programs to see if they need donations. Reuse is always the best option.
Use the converter
If you don't intend to give or donate your Lightning cable to friends or recycling organizations, you can choose to purchase an adapter to continue using this charging cable.
There are a number of Lightning to USB-C adapters available on the market today. These adapters allow you to convert your Lightning connector to USB-C, allowing you to still use your Lightning charging cable to charge your USB-C devices.
However, experts advise against this method, as it could contribute to future tech waste, so if possible, consider donating your Lightning charging cable to a friend or sending it to an electronics recycling organization.
