The IFAB rules state: "The ball is considered to be in play when it is kicked and clearly in motion." Based on this, Mbappe's pass to Garcia before shooting means his final shot is considered a live ball, not a direct free kick.

So, despite scoring a world-class goal, Mbappe hasn't officially added his name to the list of players who have scored from direct free kicks. However, the striker born in 1998 has already set an impressive milestone by equaling Cristiano Ronaldo's record in his first season at Bernabeu. Both reached 33 goals.

Mbappe still has plenty of opportunities to increase his tally. The French striker has even set a target of 40 goals, a feat no other newcomer in Real Madrid's history has achieved. The record for most goals in a first season for Real Madrid belongs to Ivan Zamorano with 37 goals in the 1992/93 season.
