In recent days, many activities in response to Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day 2025 (April 21) have taken place enthusiastically nationwide, contributing to spreading meaningful messages: "Reading books - enriching knowledge, nurturing aspirations, promoting innovation", "Reading culture - connecting communities", "Together with books, we enter the era of national progress"...

A series of diverse activities, taking place from April 15th to May 2nd, include promoting and introducing the importance of reading and reading skills; organizing drawing and storytelling competitions based on books; holding seminars on authors and their works, library work, and book collecting...

Overall, organizing activities to celebrate Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day is practical and meaningful, contributing to the widespread dissemination of the importance of reading and the formation of a reading culture, spreading a love of books. However, the formation of a reading movement in reality relies more on the "enlightenment" process of each individual with the supportive assistance of family, school, and cultural and educational management agencies.

Whether this process runs smoothly depends on the responsibility and awareness of adults regarding the importance of books for children, from preschool to high school, and the movement for regular and proper reading, which involves national resources and not just character development and enhancing individual knowledge. Parents should read with their children to cultivate knowledge, hone reading skills, and inspire them; schools should not only dedicate time to students' reading and genuinely care for school libraries, but also help children develop a method of reading for comprehension rather than memorization. The Ministry of Culture and Education should not only promote the benefits of library models at all levels, including school libraries, and organize "eventful" activities, but more importantly, need solutions for monitoring, inspection, and support to ensure these models deliver tangible results.

Among the activities in response to the 2025 National Book and Reading Culture Day, several seminars on reading trends in the digital age, where artificial intelligence (AI) is strongly influencing people's work, study, and entertainment lives, are noteworthy. However, it seems we are focusing too much on the benefits of digital technology for reading; what has been presented is insufficient to adequately warn about the "downsides" of AI and the limitations of the speed reading trend, especially in situations where many people lack well-developed reading skills.

In reality, you can "ask" Chat GPT to provide a summary of any literary work and read it to show off your knowledge, but if it's a summary of a monumental work, like "Quiet Flows the Don," for example, you'll have nothing to "show off" afterward, let alone glean any meaningful insights from it. Similarly, by briefly mentioning literary values or essential life skills and knowledge, you can claim to have read, but you can't talk about reading culture or anything more profound.

We adults have been doing a good job of promoting and educating, creating a significant shift in community awareness about the importance of books and reading culture for the future of each individual and the nation. The challenge is how to effectively implement the necessary solutions to translate this correct awareness into quality reading in practice, so that more and more individuals have a need to read regularly, just as we cannot do without oxygen or daily food and drink. Furthermore, serious surveys are needed on the operation and practical effectiveness of school library models; reading trends and reading conditions in rural and urban families to find satisfactory solutions, including rectifying the operation of models that are considered "ineffective" or have low efficiency despite state investment.
