Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang attended the ceremony announcing the decision to convert Lien Khuong Airport ( Lam Dong province) into an international airport.
With the above decision, Lien Khuong becomes the first international airport in the Central Highlands region, considered an extremely important boost contributing to the development of tourism in the Central Highlands in general and Lam Dong in particular.
From January 2017 to present, Lien Khuong Airport has served more than 1,700 irregular flights (charter) from Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, China to Da Lat by Air Asia, Korean Air, Thai Vietjet , Vietjet Air.
Currently, Lien Khuong Airport welcomes 6 international flights/day. Vietjet Air is operating 2 routes from Da Lat to Incheon and Pusan (Korea) with a frequency of 6 flights/week.
Meanwhile, Jeju Air of Korea is the only foreign airline operating flights from Korea to Da Lat with a frequency of 14 flights/week.
Lien Khuong Airport is planned by the Government to be one of 14 international airports and one of 30 airports in Vietnam by 2030.
On May 17, 2024, the Ministry of Transport approved the Lien Khuong Airport Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.
The plan aims to make Lien Khuong a 4E-class airport - the highest level in Vietnam today - by 2030, with a capacity to serve 5 million passengers and 20,000 tons of cargo per year.
By 2050, the airport's capacity is expected to be increased to 7 million passengers and 30,000 tons of cargo per year.
In the 2021-2030 period, Lien Khuong will maintain the T1 passenger terminal with a capacity of 2 million passengers/year and plan a new T2 passenger terminal with a capacity of about 3 million passengers/year.
By 2050, the T2 passenger terminal will be expanded so that the total capacity of the entire port will reach about 7 million passengers/year, reserving land for development when there is a need to upgrade the HCC road, taxiway, and aircraft parking lot - Lien Khuong Airport to ensure the exploitation of medium-range civil aircraft such as A320, A321 and equivalent; meeting level 4C standards and level 2 military airport.
Since 2018, Lien Khuong Airport has been operating at a designed capacity of around 2 million passengers/year. In 2023, it has reached a capacity of more than 2.5 million passengers and is expected to reach the same or exceed the output in 2023 in 2024.
