Among them, 64 citizens escaped from an online fraud facility in Banteay Meanchey province and one citizen was arrested for illegal residence in Oddar Meanchey province, and is being detained at the Detention Center in Siem Reap province under the General Department of Immigration, Ministry of Interior of Cambodia. Although they have returned to their homeland, the psychology and fear of these citizens are still evident when the authorities exchange and get information...
Working 16-18 hours/day
Contrary to the dream of “easy work, high salary”, on average, these people have to work 16-18 hours a day. When telling the authorities, these people could not hide their fear and obsession; at the same time, they gave a warning to people not to believe in sweet enticements.
Ms. HTT (living in Lang Son province) is one of the few women who escaped and were repatriated this time. Ms. T. recounted: Before falling into the scam, she and her group of friends went online and were informed that they would meet at My Dinh bus station to go to the South to work together. She and 3 others on the trip were taken straight to Tay Ninh to work as waitresses at a restaurant that was introduced as "easy work, high salary".
“When we arrived at this area, we were transferred to another car with 4-5 strangers. It was dark, we couldn’t see their faces, but they had guns and some other weapons in their hands. They said that I and 3 friends had been sold to them, now the only way was to ask my family for help with a ransom of more than 10 thousand USD per person. But my family couldn’t afford the ransom, so I was taken to Cambodia,” Ms. T. recounted.
Upon arriving in Cambodia, Ms. T. and many other Vietnamese, Thai and other people from other countries were forced to work as online scammers. Those who could not find “customers” were beaten and their average working hours were 16-18 hours a day under the supervision of armed men. Ms. T. and a few others were beaten every day because they could not do their jobs.
“They took sticks or electric wires and rolled them into bundles to beat us. Anyone who begged for help was beaten even more,” Ms. T. added.
Also a case returned on this occasion, Mr. NTP (residing in Dong Nai province) recounted: Before that, he looked for a job online and was introduced by someone to work as a loader, inspector, and vehicle counter in Moc Bai, Tay Ninh province.
“But when we met at the border area, they took me and the others to another car and drove us straight to Banteay Meanchey province, Cambodia. There were people carrying guns in the car so we didn’t dare resist. Here, we had to work from 4-6pm every day. If we couldn’t find “customers”, we would be beaten or electrocuted. They worked based on emotions, if we were happy it was fine, but if we were sad they would find something to beat us up. Many days, people were beaten and passed out on the spot,” said Mr. P.
Mr. P. and everyone else escaped and were able to return home this time, so they were very happy and moved and did not dare to do it again or listen to others with the trick of "easy work, high salary".
Beware of scams
More than 60 citizens escaped, with the support of the army and police of the neighboring country, and were received, returned and brought back to their country. The emotion and joy were clearly shown on each face.
Mr. LVV (living in Gia Lai province) confided: Although very scared when they learned that they were deceived and forced to work excessively under harsh conditions, when they heard that they could be sold to many other places, everyone tried to escape.
“In the area where we were detained and forced to work in Banteay Meanchey province, there were many people who escaped. I don’t know the exact number, but in addition to the 64 people who escaped, many were recaptured. Surely these people will be brutally beaten, forced to work, and even lose their lives,” LVV recounted in fear.
Mr. LVV sent his thanks to the authorities of the two countries for their support and facilitation so that he and other lucky citizens could return home on this occasion.
“I hope that everyone, especially older women and girls, never trust people online, even if they are friends, relatives, or siblings. Many scams through apps that charge money, do tasks to earn money, and “easy work with high salaries” do not really exist,” said Mr. LVV.
Mr. PHLP (living in Ho Chi Minh City) was also lucky enough to escape back to the country this time. Mr. P. warned: The scammers are very sophisticated, they come up with many tricks to lure the scammed people to lose their vigilance, when they fall into the trap, everything is already done.
Mr. PHLP recounted: Through social networks, a close friend introduced him to a group of “light work, high salary” with an income of over 600 USD/month. When he was taken across the border and transferred to another vehicle, Mr. P. knew he had been tricked. After nearly 3 months of forced labor, forced to work, and being beaten regularly, Mr. P. decided to escape with everyone, even though he knew he might face many dangers…
64 citizens escaped back to their country in a state of fear. When they met the Cambodian military and police, their feet were blistered and bleeding, but everyone was happy to have escaped. They were even happier when they met the staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia, that was also the moment they knew they were alive, rescued and able to return home.
Following the direction of the superiors, the Border Guard of Dong Nai province directed the Border Guard Station of Hoa Lu International Border Gate to coordinate with the border gate authorities and the neighboring side to organize the reception of 65 citizens from Cambodia. The reception, coordination in taking statements and handing over to the police and functional forces took place smoothly and absolutely safely.
Major NGUYEN DUC HUNG , Chief of Hoa Lu International Border Gate Border Guard Station
Lieutenant Colonel Doan Trong Nghia, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Dong Nai Provincial Border Guard, said: The repatriation of more than 60 Vietnamese citizens on this occasion continues to be a coordinated effort between the functional forces of the two countries. The direct accounts from those who have just returned are also a strong warning bell, reminding everyone to be vigilant against invitations for "easy work, high salary" on social networks to avoid being exploited and falling into the hands of human traffickers.
Lieutenant Colonel Doan Van Nghia emphasized: To limit the situation of citizens being scammed (entry and exit) through the internet or other forms of "easy work, high salary" and using high technology in fraud, citizens should be vigilant against the sophisticated tricks of criminals. At the same time, promote propaganda work in many forms through the network system and through the press to warn, prevent early, from a distance, and minimize the situation of illegal entry and exit.
