Australian police believe four Vietnamese students who disappeared in the country in early January may be "actively hiding from authorities".
"Investigations show that the international students have moved from South Australia (SA) to another location and are still there," a SA police spokesman said on January 29, referring to information that four Vietnamese international students "mysteriously disappeared" in the state in the past two months.
News of the international students surfaced in Australian media after the family of 17-year-old Sunnie Nguyen posted on social media on January 8 that she had disappeared after dinner with her backpack, clothes, laptop and identification documents. Sunnie’s phone was turned off and her social media accounts were deactivated.

The family was very worried at the time, because Sunnie was described as shy and did not speak English well. "When she first arrived in Australia, she would almost immediately go home if she had to go out alone, because she could not speak English," the family said.
Following the family's report, Adelaide authorities said they were looking for three other Vietnamese students who were also reported missing between December 2023 and January. SA police have also opened an investigation into the whereabouts of the group of Vietnamese students.
"There is currently no indication that the students are in any danger. They appear to be actively hiding from the authorities," said an SA police spokesman.
Police stressed that they were continuing to work with the federal police to locate the four students. Australian officials said they had been in contact with the students’ families in Vietnam, but they had not expressed any concerns about their welfare.
