Cannes honors filmmaker George Lucas, father of Star Wars

The father of the legendary science fiction film series Star Wars and Indiana Jones , George Lucas, was present at the 77th Cannes International Film Festival.

He will receive the honorary Palme d'Or at the closing ceremony of Cannes (tonight Vietnam time), honoring his more than half-century filmmaking career.

George Lucas spoke to hundreds of fans before the awards ceremony.

As is Cannes tradition, he also received several minutes of applause from hundreds of spectators when he appeared in the auditorium.

The 80-year-old director took the time to share with the audience about his life and career, and with current and future filmmakers about his cinematic vision and what motivated him to work in the arts for more than half a century.

"I'm so happy to be at the festival this year, it feels really nostalgic because I used to go to Cannes back in the day to see the first Indiana Jones and Star Wars films.

"Obviously I have a lot of fans, but I've never made Academy Award-winning films. That's why the honorary Palme d'Or is such a huge honor in my career," George Lucas told the audience.
