These days, on many streets in the central area of Lao Cai province, tree trimming is taking place on both sides of the road.
Pruning and caring for trees is very necessary for trees to grow and develop well, creating a landscape, ensuring safety for people and vehicles participating in traffic. Because if the trees are too dense, they will obscure traffic lights, lighting, especially obscure the vision of vehicle drivers, leading to the risk of traffic insecurity...
However, tree pruning is currently receiving mixed opinions from the public, some people support it, others do not agree with it.
Mr. Nguyen Van Toan - a resident of Nguyen Thai Hoc Street said: "I support cutting down the tree canopy, both to ensure a clear landscape and safety during the rainy season."
Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Nguyen Huy Toan - a resident of Yen Ninh Street also affirmed: "At night, Yen Ninh Street is brightly lit, both beautiful and safe. That is the result of regular tree trimming."

However, besides the supportive opinions, there are also some dissenting opinions.
Looking at the banyan tree in front of the door, Mr. Tran Van Toan, Minh Tan Street, sighed: “My house faces West. Without this banyan tree with a wide canopy, the summer sun would shine directly into the house, making it very hot and affecting health. Now the “green umbrella” of the house has disappeared, only the stump remains, looking both pitiful and sad.”
Ms. Nguyen Thanh Xuan - a resident of Yen Ninh street, said: In my opinion, pruning trees needs to be calculated to ensure that the trees are capable of providing shade on hot summer days.
From the above viewpoints, it is necessary to take care of and trim trees, however, it must follow certain standards: uniformity in height, distance of branches protruding onto the street before they must be cut. Because, not all trees have the ability to sprout from the trunk after cutting all the branches, so the cutting process cannot be rigidly done by cutting all the trees on both sides of the street.
After going to the streets - where Yen Bai Urban Environment and Construction Joint Stock Company has been pruning trees, we noticed that many trees were cut very deeply last year, and this year they were cut even deeper; many new shoots that grew after the previous cut, about 1 meter long, were also cut. Lagerstroemia, milk flower, and Sau trees... have the ability to sprout strongly, and deep cutting can still help them grow again (except for old trees), but tree varieties like Royal poinciana have a very limited ability to sprout again.
The row of trees on Tran Hung Dao Street (in front of Yen Bai Railway Station Market) had all their branches cut off since December 7, 2021. Currently, the Lagerstroemia and Sau trees have sprouted again, although the foliage is not large enough and has not yet provided shade. The Royal Poinciana trees nearby only have a few clusters of leaves, and it is very difficult for them to flourish...

At the meeting with Yen Bai Urban Environment and Construction Joint Stock Company, Mr. Tran Khac Vinh - Head of Technical Department said: The company is assigned to manage and take care of 12,900 trees in 4 central wards of Lao Cai province. Tree pruning is necessary and under the direction of the People's Committees of the wards. The implementation process also recorded negative reactions from the people. We will try to choose how to cut to ensure the technique and requirements, as well as preserve the landscape. In particular, we will prune trees with few branches, not too tall, fruit trees; and will cut branches and lower the height of large banyan trees, large branches, leaning towards the road...
When the reporter showed Mr. Tran Khac Vinh a photo of a small-leafed banyan tree, which had a small canopy and did not obstruct the driver's view or block the streetlights, but had been cut down, leaving only the trunk intact... Mr. Tran Khac Vinh admitted, "Cutting this tree like that is too painful."
It is known that before implementing tree pruning, Yen Bai Ward People's Committee issued an official dispatch on urban beautification in the ward, emphasizing: Tree pruning and beautification is not cutting down trees or losing shade, but is a necessary technical measure to prevent the risk of falling, protect people's lives and property, preserve urban beauty and reshape tree canopy to suit modern urban space; requiring grassroots cadres, specifically secretaries, neighborhood leaders, and political organizations to propagate and guide people to correctly understand and support the general policy.
It can be affirmed that the tree pruning is implemented systematically by the government, from propaganda, mobilization, creating consensus among the people as well as directing the implementation unit. However, the implementation process needs supervision and specific guidance to avoid the situation of "cutting too painfully" as commented by Mr. Tran Khac Vinh - Head of Technical Department, Yen Bai Urban Environment and Construction Joint Stock Company.
Trees that people spontaneously plant on road corridors, according to urban construction investment projects or during the Tet tree planting season... are all common assets, with the same goal of creating an ecological environment, contributing to building Lao Cai province "green, harmonious, unique, happy". Therefore, it is necessary to unify management and invest in care, pruning in a systematic and scientific manner; comply with technical processes... all for the goal of greener streets.
