A rare Stradivarius violin, crafted by master Antonio Stradivari more than 300 years ago during his heyday, has been sold for $11.3 million at an auction held by Sotheby's in New York (USA).

“This extraordinary violin represents the pinnacle of classical music craftsmanship and history,” said Mari-Claudia Jimenez, chairman of Sotheby’s. “Its unparalleled sound and prestigious provenance have captivated collectors and musicians alike.”

The violin, called the “Joachim-Ma Stradivarius,” became the third most expensive instrument ever sold at auction, though the buyer was not disclosed. The previous record for the most expensive instrument sold at auction was held by another Stradivarius, the “Lady Blunt,” which sold for $15.9 million in 2011.

“What sets the Joachim-Ma Stradivarius apart is its exceptional sound – rich, complex and profound,” said Sotheby's auction house.

The instrument was once owned by renowned Chinese violinist Si-Hon Ma, who donated it to the New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) in Boston before his death in 2009, on the condition that it be sold in the future to raise funds for scholarships.

Previously, the instrument belonged to the 19th-century Hungarian pianist Joseph Joachim, who is famous for his collaborations with legendary composers such as Johannes Brahms./.
