The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns of a risk of monkeypox resurgence this summer.
According to the US CDC, monkeypox cases in the country have decreased after peaking in August 2022, but the spread of the disease has not ended.
The agency said monkeypox could re-emerge in late spring and summer as people gather for festivals and other events.
The warning comes after a series of monkeypox cases were reported in Chicago. According to the US CDC, from April 17 to May 5, Chicago health authorities recorded 12 cases and 1 suspected case of the disease.
The CDC continues to receive reports of community-acquired monkeypox in the United States and around the world , and is encouraging people at risk to get vaccinated. As of May 10, the United States has recorded 30,395 cases of the disease.
Monkeypox is a disease that is endemic in Africa, but in 2022, the number of cases in Europe increased dramatically, causing the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) in July of that year.
On May 11, WHO declared that monkeypox is no longer a PHEIC.
Speaking at an online press conference, WHO Director-General Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that after the number of infections decreased sharply, he accepted the WHO Emergency Committee's recommendation to lift the highest alert level for monkeypox.
During the committee meeting, Mr. Ghebreyesus said that the number of monkeypox cases reported globally in the past three months was up to 90% lower than the number of cases in the previous three months.
Monkeypox can be transmitted through close contact such as touching or coming into contact with secretions from an infected person.
Symptoms of the disease can be easily recognized as high fever, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, rash... Normally, this disease can last 2-4 weeks and symptoms are detected after the body is infected with the virus from 5 to 21 days./.
