The future Ligue 1 will be separated from the Professional Football League (LFP) system and managed by a new operating model similar to the English Premier League. The newest professional playground of French football will officially start from the 2026-2027 season.
French Football Federation announces plans to reform national competition system
In a press conference on May 12, President of the French Football Federation (FFF) Philippe Diallo announced to the media a comprehensive reform with the aim of increasing the competitiveness of French football and in return, improving the income of the 18 clubs participating in the tournament.
One of the first actions taken by French football was to dissolve the Professional Football League (LFP), the entity that manages the top league Ligue 1, and to create a commercial company with 18 clubs participating in the competition as members. Each club is a shareholder, has veto power and has a significant say in decisions related to Ligue 1.
Philippe Diallo pledges reform on day he is elected FFF president at the end of 2024
Philippe Diallo said the company model is modeled after the current Premier League: "We will transform from an association under the 1901 law into a commercial company, responsible for promoting Ligue 1 and organizing tournaments. The company will not elect a president, management will be handled by the board of directors and the CEO will be hired by the clubs, paid a salary and can be dismissed if he does not work effectively."
PSG qualify for Champions League final
"France will have a Premier League, although modeled after the English, but still retaining its French identity. We want to preserve the country's sporting and cultural characteristics and do not want the French Premier League to be a copy of the English Premier League," the head of the FFF affirmed.
Various aspects will be closely examined to strengthen Ligue 1, which has recently been hit by a TV rights crisis and a number of clubs on the brink of collapse due to financial difficulties. Among them is Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon), who have been relegated to the Second Division and are at risk of not being able to participate in European competitions next season. Bordeaux were relegated to the Fourth Division for the same reason.
Lyon faces financial crisis, forced to relegate
The FFF, which plays a key role in managing football tournaments in the national system, also wants to adjust the financial laws that currently govern French football, limit the number of players in club squads, control the time-sharing model and implement a fairer redistribution of revenue among the 18 teams…
Olympique Marseille qualify for next season's Champions League
The draft law drawn up by the French Football Federation has been approved by the FFF Executive Board, thus formalizing the plan to start the procedures for the formation of the "Premier League" is being promoted. The 2025-2026 season is crucial in defining the strategy that will be applied for two years, with the aim of initiating a revolution to consolidate the level of Ligue 1 and, if possible, to approach the level of the four top European leagues.
