Fairy tale love

Behind the door, Mr. Vu Duc Nguyen (Van Loi quarter, Quang Tien ward, Sam Son city, Thanh Hoa ) was lying curled up on the bed. The man weighed 25kg, his body was shriveled, only one thumb on his left hand was still moving. He used that finger to move all over the computer keyboard and then showed us about the unfinished collection of short stories.

Since having a wife and children, Mr. Nguyen's life has always been burdened by food, clothing, rice, and money, but he feels happy and finds life worth living. Happy because he has become a real man, has someone to trust with his love and a happy family.

Talking about the fairy tale love story, Mr. Nguyen said that before, his wife, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, worked as a hairdresser and shampooer. Every day, his mother often came to wash his hair and talked to Ms. Hai about her son's situation.

In 2021, Ms. Hai went to Mr. Nguyen's house to visit. After a few conversations, the two developed feelings for each other. "Honestly, I didn't think she would open her heart to a quadriplegic. Her words made my heart flutter. Gradually, I realized that her love for me was sincere and we fell in love after a month of meeting," Mr. Nguyen said.

In February 2023, Mr. Nguyen and his wife welcomed their first son. In early 2024, the young couple held their wedding. At the wedding, friends and relatives were deeply moved to see the bride holding a baby boy in her arms, walking down the aisle, with the disabled groom in a wheelchair.

"Many times I thought it was a dream to have a beautiful wife and pretty children. In order to thank my wife, who sacrificed her youth to be with me, I composed and published a book of poems called " Lover ". The book includes 50 love poems, expressing deep emotions raised from a throbbing heart, longing to love and be loved," Mr. Nguyen confided.

Rubbing her husband's shriveled hands, Ms. Hai shared that when she learned that she loved and decided to "remarry" a disabled man, her family and relatives strongly opposed it.

"When we met, I felt so sorry for him. Since that time, I have always thought of him - a strong-willed disabled man. Every day, I arrange my work at the shop to go over and talk to him," said Ms. Hai.

According to Ms. Hai, being the wife of a disabled person has many disadvantages. He cannot help his wife with housework, carry the children, nor accompany his wife and children to places she once dreamed of... But love, humanity, and the "call" of love have helped her overcome all barriers.

"Through your eyes and words, I understand your sincere feelings for me. You warmed my heart and made me believe in true love again," Hai said, giving her husband a loving look.

6 times selling house to save... thumb

At the age of 34, Mr. Nguyen is still like a newborn baby who has to depend on others for all his activities.

Talking about her son, Mrs. Vu Thi Hue said, Nguyen is the second child in a family of 3 children. Nguyen was born normal, with fair skin, a high forehead, bright, intelligent eyes. When he was 7 months old, Nguyen had a fever, his limbs gradually atrophied and then became paralyzed.

"To have money to treat my child, my family sold our house 6 times. I also quit my teaching job at school to take care of my child full time. When Nguyen was 11 years old, a Dutch doctor said that his illness was incurable, so we should not sell our house anymore," Ms. Hue recalled the days of "fighting" with her child against polio.

Being constantly sick, unable to move his limbs, little Nguyen could not go to school. Mrs. Hue taught him the letters and numbers. Not letting his mother down, Nguyen continued to put together, spell, and learn math. At the age of 5, he could read, and at the age of 7, he could add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Ms. Hue said that her family was in the group of people who went to build a new economy in the old Song Be province (now Binh Duong and Binh Phuoc provinces). Life became more and more difficult after selling the house 6 times to treat their children. In 2003, the whole family settled in Quang Tien commune.

In 2012, Mr. Nguyen was given a laptop by a benefactor. Even though his whole body was cramped and he could only move one thumb on his left hand, Mr. Nguyen still learned how to use it.

At first, the young man thought he would use the computer to play games and read news to relieve his sadness. However, when he was connected to the community by the social network Facebook, he started reading poems, short stories, and novels. He realized that literature does not need well-trained "workers" but also "accommodates" creative souls and he asked poetry to "speak for his heart".

"Every time I use the computer, I have to lie on my side and use one thumb on my left hand to move the mouse. In about 20 minutes, I can finish composing a short poem," said Mr. Nguyen.

In 2013, the first collection of 60 poems, titled " A Poem for You ", was published. The poet's first collection of poems was inspired by his first love. After 10 years of hard work, Mr. Nguyen has published 8 collections of poems.

His poems are the voice of the heart, containing the burning desire to become a normal person of a disabled young man. That dream is simple but painful to the bone. The poet chooses a writing style imbued with folk and lyrical style; using traditional poetic forms such as song that luc bat, luc bat, fables, etc.

Writing poetry helps a quadriplegic young man integrate into the community and no longer feel lonely. Mr. Nguyen has thousands of followers and friends on social networks such as Facebook, Zalo, and Youtube.

"I am happy that readers know me as a one-fingered poet. More interestingly, many readers feel the harmony in their souls from my poems, come to my house to chat and confide. I hope to sell more and more books to have money to take care of my wife and children and to share a part with the unfortunate," Mr. Nguyen shared.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hop, a cultural and social officer of Quang Tien ward, said that Mr. Nguyen is one of the people with severe physical disabilities. His whole body is cramped and only the thumb of his right hand can move. Not resigned to his cruel fate, Mr. Nguyen has risen up and asserted himself.

"To earn money to support his life, Mr. Nguyen writes poetry, prints and sells books. His poems are read by many people. When he has money from selling books, Mr. Nguyen shares a portion to help those in difficult circumstances in the neighborhood," Ms. Hop added.
