According to data from Appfigures , ChatGPT became the most downloaded app globally in March, surpassing competitors like Instagram and TikTok.
This is the first time ChatGPT has topped the monthly download rankings, which is also the month with the most downloads. Specifically, ChatGPT installations in March reached 46 million, up 28% compared to February.
Following ChatGPT are Instagram (2nd) and TikTok (3rd). Download data is compiled from the App Store and Play Store, the rankings do not include games.
According to TechCrunch , the reason for the surge in ChatGPT downloads may come from a series of upgrades in March, including the ability to create native photos in the app.
Images created by ChatGPT have flooded social media, especially Studio Ghibli-themed memes and photos. The famous Japanese animation studio behind films like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away .
OpenAI also removed some content moderation policies with its photo-generated images, while upgrading ChatGPT's voice chat capabilities.
According to Appfigures , ChatGPT installs increased 148% in Q1 2025 compared to the same period last year (Q1 2024). However, the analytics firm believes that new features are not the key factor in motivating users to download the software.
“It seems like ChatGPT is becoming a verb, like what Google did in the 2000s. More people think of ‘ChatGPT’ than just ‘AI,’” said Ariel Michaeli, founder and CEO of Appfigures.
According to Michaeli, as the AI chatbot market heats up with competitors like Grok, Manus AI, or DeepSeek, people who aren't interested in the field will start to learn, eventually downloading ChatGPT.
Because ChatGPT has such a wide recognition, other AI chatbots may have a harder time competing. That's part of the reason why Anthropic's Claude has low downloads.
Meanwhile, Grok's growing popularity comes from the promotion of billionaire Elon Musk and social network X, not necessarily because this tool is better than ChatGPT.

In January and February, Instagram ranked second in downloads on both the App Store and Play Store, while TikTok ranked first.
According to TechCrunch , the spike in TikTok downloads at the beginning of the year may have come from the US ban, which caused users to rush to download the app. Currently, the ban has been postponed as the Trump administration seeks to reach a deal with China.
Previously, Instagram regularly topped TikTok in the global download rankings. Despite facing competitive pressure, it was still the most downloaded app in 2024 (excluding games).
According to a Piper Sandler survey, Instagram is the most popular social media app among teens in the US, with a monthly usage rate of 87%. By comparison, 79% of respondents use TikTok monthly, and 72% use Snapchat.
In March, Meta's apps took three of the top five spots, along with Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. The rest of the top 10 were Temu, CapCut, Telegram, Snapchat, and Threads.
In total, these 10 apps recorded 339 million downloads in March, a sharp increase from the previous month (299 million downloads).
