Chelsea fall short of Arsenal

VnExpressVnExpress22/10/2023

Chelsea led by two goals but were still held to a 2-2 draw by visiting Arsenal in the London derby in round nine of the Premier League.

Arsenal maintained their unbeaten record in the Premier League this season, with Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard scoring to earn the visitors a point. A lapse in concentration in defence meant Chelsea were unable to extend their winning streak to three games, despite Cole Palmer and Mykhaylo Mudryk scoring to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Chelsea started the game better with a strong pressure, scoring before their opponents had even made a mistake. In the 14th minute, Sterling crossed the ball from the right for Mudryk to head it into the raised arm of defender William Saliba. Referee Chris Kavanagh did not detect the incident, but VAR intervened to help award a penalty to the home team. The time from when the ball touched Saliba's hand until referee Kavanagh stopped the match to review the incident was nearly three minutes.

Palmer had just scored his first Premier League goal from a penalty against Burnley last round, and this time he was given the right to take the free kick again. Sterling went to take the ball from Palmer to take it, but midfielder Enzo Fernandez told Sterling to give it back to his junior. Fernandez was right, as Palmer calmly shot into the bottom left corner, fooling goalkeeper David Raya to open the scoring.

Chelsea continued to surprise the visitors in the second half, when Mudryk's cross from the left was over-footed, but the ball flew straight to the far corner, beyond the reach of goalkeeper David Raya. After this goal, Raya was caught on camera several times, as he was standing a bit too high and could not reach the ball. A few minutes later, he passed straight to Palmer in the penalty area, but this time the Spanish goalkeeper made up for his mistake by rushing in to save the ball.

Palmer would regret this opportunity, as Arsenal scored twice in seven minutes. In the 77th minute, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez passed to Enzo Fernandez when the Argentine midfielder was not ready to receive the ball. Rice quickly shot from 35 meters away, sending the ball into the far corner when Sanchez could not run back.

The equalizer helped the visitors and Arsenal fans to be more excited. In the 84th minute, Saka, who had been playing poorly before, shone with a cross from the right to the second post for Trossard to tap in with one touch to make the score 2-2. Before that, coach Mauricio Pochettino brought in Reece James to support right-back Malo Gusto, but Chelsea still conceded a goal in this position. Gusto seemed to be surprised and could not chase down the new player like Trossard.

Coach Mikel Arteta made effective substitutions, but Chelsea's substitutes failed to impress. Striker Nicolas Jackson replaced Mudryk and had a chance to face the goalkeeper, but he dribbled slowly and was caught by Raya.

Arteta and Pochettino were teammates at PSG, and this time the battle of wits between the two coaches was a draw. At one point Arteta argued with the referee, but Pochettino ran out to stop him. Arteta's team, although rated higher before the match, could be satisfied with a point, but it was not enough to reach the top of the table.
