How much does it cost to study in Canada?

VnExpressVnExpress30/04/2023

International students need to pay more than 50,000 CAD (860 million VND) for each year of study in Canada, including tuition and living expenses - a level considered lower than the US, Australia and UK.

Tuition

Canadian universities charge different tuition fees, depending on the program of study, student nationality and location of study.

At the university level, if Canadian students pay an average of 6,500 CAD (112 million VND), international students have to pay about 36,000 CAD (618 million VND) per year.

By field of study, tuition fees for Dentistry and Medicine are at $59,000 CAD, higher than those for Social Sciences and Humanities. Tuition fees for Management and Business are closer to average, at around $36,000 CAD.

University tuition fees vary widely across cities, with Ontario being among the highest at around $45,000 CAD per year at the undergraduate level, while students in Newfoundland pay just $16,000 CAD.

If you follow the postgraduate system, this level is more than 21,000 CAD (360 million VND) a year.

Accommodation

International students studying in Canada have many accommodation options, including homestay (in boarding houses or student villages), accommodation provided by the school or renting a house on their own.

Some homestay services charge an initial (or placement) fee of $200 CAD and monthly rents of around $1,000 CAD. Student housing or university dormitories range from $250 to $625 CAD per month. Many of these facilities also offer meal plans.

If renting a house outside and sharing a room, students need to pay about 1,300-2,500 CAD (22-43 million VND), depending on where they live and the type of house.

Living expenses

If renting a private house, students spend about 150 CAD (2.5 million VND) per month for personal utilities such as electricity, water, heating, council tax. Each month, the Internet costs about 40 CAD and the phone plan is 30 CAD.

The average weekly food cost is around AUD 50-65. A meal in a restaurant in Canada costs around CAD 15 per person and a movie ticket is around CAD 9.

Single tickets for public transportation cost a few CAD, monthly passes cost around CAD 80-100. Students may be eligible for discounts on some public transportation systems. Taxis are a popular mode of transportation in Canada, charging around CAD 2-6 per kilometer.

Another important cost to consider is health insurance, which varies by region. Some places that cover health insurance for international students include Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan. However, this depends on the length of stay and the student’s nationality. Meanwhile, if studying in Quebec, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Yukon, international students must provide their own health insurance.

Students should also spend around CAD 600 per year on course materials. Warm clothing is a must as winter temperatures in Canada can drop to -40 degrees Celsius.

One way to save on living expenses is to take advantage of student discounts offered by some businesses, shops, and restaurants. The discount if you have a student card is around 10-15%.

In addition, undergraduate and graduate programs in Canada offer scholarships and grants to international students. International students should seek these support packages early as scholarship funds are often limited and highly competitive. Scholarships may be awarded to candidates with athletic or academic achievements, or with special abilities in a particular field.
