The rampart was built of earth, with a total length of 34km, and interspersed with gun emplacements and watchtowers. Over the next 100 years, Luy Thay still stood firm against many mutinies.

Luy Thay is a system of military structures built by Lord Nguyen to protect Dang Trong from attacks by Lord Trinh of Dang Ngoai. According to historical records, in 1630, Lord Nguyen Phuc Nguyen, fearing that the Trinh army would annex him, approved Dao Duy Tu's plan to build a massive rampart stretching from west to east.
At some sections of the rampart in Quang Binh today, there is a stone stele built by the cultural sector to introduce Luy Thay, stating that this is "the place where fierce battles took place between the two feudal forces Trinh - Nguyen during nearly 50 years of civil war", recognized as a national monument in 1992.

Dao Duy Tu had built the Thay Rampart with earth and stone, with ironwood stakes outside and bamboo stakes inside. The rampart was 3-6m high on average, 6m wide, and had 5 floors of earth, so elephants and horses could pass through. Because it was built along the Nhat Le River system, the Thay Rampart was even more difficult to attack.

Luy Thay is also known as Dao Duy Tu - the name of the mandarin who commanded the design and construction of this project. He was born in Tinh Gia district, Thanh Hoa . He was only an official for 8 years but he gave important strategies to help Lord Nguyen Phuc Nguyen build the Nguyen family's foundation in Dang Trong. Thanks to that, he is considered the first founding father of the Nguyen family.

Dao Duy Tu passed the second-place exam under King Le The Tong. He took the Hoi exam, wrote a very good essay, and was highly appreciated. However, the Ministry of Rites presented evidence that he had changed his surname, lied about his background, and ordered his name to be removed from the second-place position, stripped of his hat and clothes, and imprisoned.
The reason was that Dao Duy Tu's father - Dao Ta Han, was a royal guard, then was sent back to his hometown to become a singer and died early. At that time, in Dang Ngoai, singers were considered "lowly", their children were not allowed to take exams, and were not allowed to become mandarins. Dao Duy Tu changed his name to Vu Duy Tu (after his mother's last name) to take the exam.
The book Dai Nam Thuc Luc (Tien Bien, volume 2) recorded that in 1593, "Thanh Hoa held a regional exam. The Hien Ti official considered Duy Tu to be the son of a theater troupe, so he stripped him of his name and did not allow him to take the exam. Duy Tu returned in anger. Hearing that the lord (Nguyen) loved the people and valued his students, and that all the heroes had submitted, he decided to go to the South alone to follow him."
Later, when he met Dao Duy Tu and saw that he was knowledgeable about worldly affairs, Nguyen Phuc Nguyen was very happy. He immediately held a meeting with the court to appoint Dao Duy Tu as Nha Uy Noi Tan, with the title of Loc Khue Hau, to oversee internal and external military affairs and participate in important discussions.
