On August 5, the US General Services Administration (GSA) officially added three leading artificial intelligence (AI) platforms including ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google) and Claude (Anthropic) to the list of approved vendors, paving the way for widespread AI deployment in government agencies.
The move allows federal agencies to directly use AI tools through GSA's existing contracting platform without having to negotiate individually with each vendor.
According to GSA, the approved platforms have passed multiple performance and security tests, and are committed to complying with federal standards and using AI responsibly.
“We don’t pick winners or losers,” said Stephen Ehikian, deputy administrator of GSA. “Our goal is to provide as many tools as possible to increase the productivity of government employees.”
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, which have been restricted to government use, will now be officially available in the federal technology market. GSA said it will continue to expand its list of AI vendors, but said the three current platforms are leading the way in terms of approval.
Following the announcement, shares of Alphabet - Google's parent company - rose slightly by 0.1% in pre-market trading.
