Luu Thi Thu Uyen's unexpected injury forced her to temporarily withdraw from the preparation for the 33rd SEA Games. However, that did not affect the team's preparation too much, as the remaining members still competed excellently and won the gold medal in the women's team kata event at the 2025 Asian Championship.
In particular, Bui Ngoc Nhi and Hoang Thi Thu Uyen, 2 of the 4 members competing in the tournament, are young faces who have just been promoted to the main team, alongside experienced fighters Nguyen Thi Phuong and Nguyen Ngoc Tram, but have competed excellently and contributed greatly to this success.
Following the success at the Asian tournament, the female martial artists also won a gold medal in the women's team kata event at the 2025 Southeast Asian Championship, while Nguyen Ngoc Tram also excellently won a gold medal in the women's individual kata event. The consecutive successes have helped coach Do Thi Thu Ha and her team gain the confidence to defend their title as "Queen" of Kata, after winning two consecutive gold medals at the 31st and 32nd Congresses.
The Vietnamese women's karate team is trying their best to defend the SEA Games gold medal.
The fact that Luu Thi Thu Uyen had to withdraw due to injury was anticipated by the coaching staff in the process of rejuvenating the squad. In particular, team captain Nguyen Thi Phuong, who has competed in 4 SEA Games, is also gradually entering the final stage of her playing career.
"Despite the turmoil, the team has maintained stability thanks to the coordination between two experienced athletes, Phuong and Tram, and two promising young faces. With the Asian gold medal as a support, the whole team is very confident in aiming for the highest goal at the 33rd SEA Games," added coach Do Thi Thu Ha.
Before competing in Thailand, the Vietnamese women's kata team will compete in the Serie A tournament in Malaysia. This is the final tournament for the players to re-evaluate their performance, correct technical factors, and observe their direct opponents at the 33rd SEA Games.
"We compete in a 3-person team event, so solidarity and good coordination are vital factors. No one can shine alone, the whole team must be unified from movements to spirit," martial artist Nguyen Ngoc Tram, who was in the gold medal-winning team at the previous 2 SEA Games, emphasized improving her technique to defend her title.
