On the afternoon of August 7, the 2025 ASEAN Women's Cup witnessed a big surprise when the Myanmar women's team defeated U23 Australia with a score of 2-1 in the opening match of Group B. In which, Australia controlled the ball superiorly and launched 8 shots, twice as many as their opponents.

In this opening match, Australia only brought a young squad to the tournament, with young players from the Australian U23 women's team and were still rated higher thanks to their superior physical strength and technique. Meanwhile, the Southeast Asian representative was not highly regarded by experts.

However, facing Myanmar's tight and sharp counter-attacking style of play, the representative of the kangaroo country had to accept defeat.

In the first half, despite controlling the ball with 64% of the time and having more shots, U23 Australia was unexpectedly punctured by a technical shot by May Thet Mon Myint in the 32nd minute. The long-range shot followed the trajectory of "falling yellow leaves" that completely left the Australian goalkeeper helpless, opening the score.

In the second half, the Southeast Asian team continued to take advantage of their opponents' mistakes. In the 47th minute, the Australian goalkeeper passed the ball straight to Win Theingi Tun, creating conditions for the Myanmar striker to increase the score to 2-0.

Despite great efforts in the final minutes and a goal in the 85th minute thanks to Furphy, Australia still had to accept a 1-2 defeat after 90 minutes of play.

With this result, Myanmar temporarily took the lead in Group B while waiting for the result of the match between the Philippines and Timor Leste, at 7:30 p.m.

In the second round of the tournament, Group A will see Thailand face Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia on August 9. Group B will take place on August 10, with Myanmar facing Timor Leste, and Australia facing the Philippines.
