Australia is the only team to use the U23 squad in the 2025 Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship. This is a tournament rule, due to the difference in the level of football in the land of the kangaroo compared to other football teams in Southeast Asia. Australia must use a young squad to reduce this difference.

However, U23 Australia is still highly rated. Therefore, their 1-2 defeat against Myanmar this afternoon was a big surprise.
Myanmar took a two-goal lead in the 32nd and 47th minutes, thanks to May Thet Mon Myint and Win Theingi Tun respectively.
It wasn’t until the 84th minute that the Australian U23 women’s team found an equalizer, thanks to Holly Furphy. However, the goal couldn’t save the Australian U23 team from defeat on the opening day.

Immediately after that, the heavyweight candidate for the championship, the Philippines, had a resounding 7-0 victory over Timor Leste.
The Philippines' goals in this match were scored by Schinaman in the 2nd minute, Quezada in the 7th and 32nd minutes, Hali Long in the 9th minute, Tolentin in the 57th and 64th minutes, and Wyrzynski in the 75th minute.
This victory helps the Philippines temporarily lead Group B after the first round of matches. Second place is Myanmar, followed by the U23 teams Australia and Timor Leste.
On August 10, Myanmar will face the underdog Timor Leste. Meanwhile, U23 Australia will face the Philippines.
