Authorities in Cambodia's capital have issued a directive calling on tourists to respect traffic laws during the upcoming Chol Chnam Thmey traditional New Year holiday.

According to a VNA correspondent in Phnom Penh, the recently issued directive prohibits spraying water, throwing water bags, smearing powder on passersby, as well as other disorderly, chaotic and dangerous acts.

Phnom Penh City authorities will hold a traditional Cambodian New Year celebration called Sankranta at the Wat Phnom Historical and Cultural Relic Site from April 13-16.

Wat Phnom Sankranta's exciting programs will include New Year's Eve ceremonies, Buddha image processions, sand mountain building, Buddha image bathing, exhibitions of ancient paintings and cultural artifacts, art performances, concerts and folk games.

For Cambodians, they believe that Quan The Thien is a god sent by heaven to take care of the people for a period of one year, after which another god will come down to replace him.

In addition, the pagoda is a sacred place and also the common home of the whole community. Therefore, all festivals are concentrated at the pagoda, especially the Choul Chnam Thmey New Year celebration.

According to the 2024 holiday schedule, during the upcoming Choul Chnam Thmey traditional New Year, Cambodian people will celebrate the traditional New Year from April 13-16, one day longer than usual./.
