According to a presidential decree on December 7, Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela, who has headed three consecutive cabinets since his appointment in October 2022, was dismissed without giving any reason.
Mr Tambela was appointed prime minister after the coup that brought Captain Ibrahim Traore to power. The decree said the government members would continue to run the affairs of the government until a new cabinet was formed.
Burkina Faso has been in turmoil since a January 2022 coup led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. Eight months later, Mr. Damiba was overthrown by Captain Traore. Mr. Damiba is currently in exile in Togo.
According to the decree, members of the dissolved government will continue to serve in their roles until a new cabinet is appointed.
Burkina Faso has been fighting Islamist insurgents, including those linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS), for nearly a decade. These groups began spreading into Burkina from neighboring Mali.
When he takes power in 2022, Traoré has pledged to improve the security situation compared to previous administrations.
The dismissal of the prime minister and the dissolution of the government could create further instability within Burkina Faso. The new administration will face a dual challenge: improving security and restoring public confidence.
