Workers at nursery No. 8 Tan Phuoc (Son Lan hamlet, Son Dinh commune, Cho Lach district) produce Tien Cuong rambutan seedlings.

Focus on production

Tran Huu Nghi, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cho Lach District, said: Every year, Cho Lach gardeners produce seedlings with quantities that fluctuate according to the product consumption market. Currently, jackfruit and durian are the main seedlings that gardeners focus on producing. Normally, every year, seedlings will sell for a high price from the first to the fourth lunar month and from the fifth lunar month onwards, the selling price tends to decrease.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc (commonly known as Tu Phuoc), 67 years old, residing in Son Lan hamlet, Son Dinh commune, said that his family has been involved in the production of seedlings, ornamental flowers and urban trees for 8 years, with an area of nearly 1 hectare of land for planting seedlings. The average output is 50,000 trees/year. In 2021, his family planned 3 hectare of land to grow Tien Cuong rambutan on his home land (Son Phung hamlet, Son Dinh commune) which has been certified by the Department of Agriculture and Environment. Traders in the Eastern region mainly consume the seedlings produced by the family's nursery. Depending on the crop season, the nursery hires 5-8 workers/day who are local freelance workers.

According to Mr. Tu Phuoc, Tien Cuong rambutan is the main seedling produced at the family's nursery No. 8, and is favored by customers everywhere. Because the seedlings have outstanding advantages such as: large fruit, no cracking when changing seasons. This year, the situation of seedling production is more positive than the same period because the salinity level has not increased and directly affected the family's seedling production. In particular, the government, departments, branches, organizations and related units at all levels have coordinated to build works and irrigation systems to prevent salinity and store fresh water effectively in the locality.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bach Nhan, 60 years old, residing in Son Phung hamlet, Son Dinh commune, said: “I am a single woman, have no land for production, am a freelance manual laborer and my family is in difficult circumstances in the locality. Because of my old age, I am rarely hired by people. I have been doing odd jobs in the process of producing seedlings at nursery No. 8 for 8 years, I can only work 10-15 days a month, with an income of about 6 million VND and have to take 2-3 months off without income. When the market for seedlings is bustling, I have a regular job, creating a stable income for gardeners and local seedling production workers.”

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, 40 years old, residing in Tan Phu hamlet, Son Dinh commune, said: “I have 2 hectares of land specializing in providing all kinds of trees (planting, ornamental and construction) with the signboard of Thanh Phong Nursery No. 2 under Tan Phu Agricultural Service Cooperative. In 2010, I continued to promote the family's traditional work of producing seedlings. Every year, I produce over 50 thousand seedlings of all kinds. In particular, Tieu Long wax durian is the main seedling produced. On average, every day, the family nursery hires 3-4 workers who are local freelance workers.”

Tan Phu Agricultural Service Cooperative has agreed to divide the nurseries of its members (TV) in a consistent and clear order, in order to affirm the exclusive brand of the nursery in the seedling consumption market. Currently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has recognized more than 50 trees and parent gardens for TV of Tan Phu Agricultural Service Cooperative. Typical varieties of seedlings include: jackfruit (Indonesian red flesh, Thai super early, To Nu...); durian (Dona - Thailand, Ri6, Sap Tieu Long, Mon Thong, Black Thorn...).

Mr. Thanh Phong has been the Chairman of Tan Phu Agricultural Service Cooperative for 9 years. The Cooperative has linked inputs and outputs in seedling production for TV. By joining the Cooperative, TV has integrated practical experience in seedling production, contributing to improving sustainable income for the family. The Cooperative always accompanies and supports TV to overcome difficulties or obstacles throughout the seedling production process with its own actual capabilities.

“Currently, all seedlings produced by local farmers have orders placed on the consumer market, with prices relatively stable and not fluctuating compared to the same period. Moving forward, we recommend that the State and relevant units have practical plans to strictly and thoroughly handle seedling production sites that have not been certified by the Department of Agriculture and Environment as parent trees and gardens but sell products at lower prices than those certified by the Department of Agriculture and Environment, creating fair competition,” Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong emphasized.

Chairman of Tan Phu Agricultural Service Cooperative Nguyen Thanh Phong said that this year, the price of commercial durian has dropped dramatically, so farmers are not bold enough to invest in new cultivation to create a sustainable source of income for their families. Therefore, gardeners producing durian seedlings are facing many difficulties in selling their durian.

“The locality is focusing on improving the quality of seedlings as well as trees and parent gardens, contributing to creating a product value chain. The district’s Department of Agriculture and Environment regularly coordinates with relevant units to organize training or provide guidance for gardeners to produce seedlings locally. The management and control of plant variety quality is always the top concern of the district’s Department of Agriculture and Environment.”
