The title of the world's largest shopping mall belongs to Iran.
Located in northeast Tehran, Iran, the giant shopping mall Iran Mall covers an area of 317,000 m2 and consists of 7 floors, but its entire infrastructure area covers a whopping 1.35 million m2 and is expected to expand to 1.6 million m2. Since 2014, more than 1,200 contractors and about 25,000 workers have been working around the clock to make the world's largest shopping mall a reality. In 2018, the first phase of construction was completed and the 267,000 m2 total leasable area and 708 retail outlets were opened on May 1, 2018. That same year, Iran Mall set a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous concrete pouring period in the world at 6 days.
Iran Mall, also known as Iran’s retail wonderland, has over 700 stores leased by a variety of local and international brands, offering a wide range of goods and services, but it also has a range of amenities you won’t find in most shopping malls around the world. For example, Iran Mall has no less than 12 IMAX cinemas as well as a state-of-the-art 2,000-seat cinema hall, an on-site museum, and several art galleries.
In terms of entertainment options, Iran Mall features an impressive amusement park, rooftop tennis courts, a convention center, a hotel, and numerous conference rooms. A new five-star hotel and a state-of-the- art sports center are in the works. In addition to the above amenities, Iran Mall also features several spaces inspired by Persian art and culture. The Iran Mall’s traditional bazaar is inspired by the bazaars of Tabriz, Isfahan, and Shiraz, while the Didar Garden is inspired by the traditional brick architecture of central Iran and is decorated with palm trees and fountains.
One of the highlights of a visit to the Mall of Iran is undoubtedly the Mirror Hall, which features over 38 million pieces of mirror crafted by some of Iran’s finest craftsmen. The mall is also home to the Jondishapour Library, an impressive library with over 45,000 books, manuscripts and documents.
