At the opening ceremony of the "11th National Student Chemistry Olympiad, 2023" organized by the University of Natural Sciences - VNU-HCM on the afternoon of April 18, Professor Morten Peter Meldal shared with students about scientific research, especially Chemistry.
Professor Morten Peter Meldal, winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, shares about his journey to the Nobel Prize
He said that since he was a child, he had the opportunity to interact with the natural world through family picnics, along with which he constantly asked questions about everything around him, and his love for science began from there. Professor Morten Peter Meldal said that he chose Chemistry to study because he realized that Chemistry is everything, it is everywhere and there should be no limitations in Chemistry research.
"We should inspire young people to love chemistry through many vivid images. They should boldly pursue their studies with love and perseverance" - Professor Morten Peter Meldal said.
Attending the ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, shared that scientific research is currently facing many constraints, especially in terms of finance. According to statistics, 1 in 4 people in Vietnam now study management economics . The question is, does management economics really need more scientists? How to guide young people to choose the path of science?

Responding to this question, Professor Morten Peter Meldal said that in Denmark there are many research funding funds from large corporations and companies. These funds will fund basic research, not applied research, thus promoting a lot of freedom in research. National funding funds are also increasingly following the trend of increasing the freedom of research for scientists, both financially and in terms of time.
Regarding research, Denmark always has special policies, creating the most comfort for scientists. Denmark clearly divides between basic research and applied research, each type will have separate requirements, they invest a lot in basic research because it takes a long time to develop freely. From that freedom of development will bring valuable applications to society.
How to make young people love science is still a big problem for the whole world. Young people choosing science after other fields such as law, medicine, business... is a common trend in the world, because the path to stimulating science is still difficult. The love of research must start from a young age, from young people knowing how to ask questions and being curious and they are given opportunities to explore those things. With today's young people, we must trust them, give them challenges to do and overcome the challenges.
