Pope Leo XIV, 69, is from Chicago, Illinois, USA. Before being elected Pope, he spent most of his career as a missionary in South America. He was Bishop of Chiclayo, northwestern Peru from 2015-2023.

He was appointed by Pope Francis as Prefect of the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops in January 2023 and was created a Cardinal in September of the same year.

In his speech, Pope Leo XIV thanked the Cardinals for their trust in choosing him as head of the Catholic Church.

He expressed gratitude to all the cardinals who had chosen him as his successor. Pope Leo XIV outlined his vision of the Catholic Church as a Church that "builds bridges" and is active in dialogue.

"We must work together to become a missionary Church. A Church that builds bridges and dialogues," the Pope stressed.

The new Pope also called on people to "show charity" to everyone "and to dialogue with love".
