Increase connectivity

Can Tho City Department of Construction is currently assigned to manage 7 national highways with a length of 277km; 40 provincial roads with a length of 817km; 31 inland waterways with a length of about 595km and 3 large bridges in the city: Quang Trung Bridge, Cai Rang Bridge and Tran Hoang Na Bridge. Recently, the Department of Construction has regularly directed units to pay attention to and perform well the management and maintenance of the traffic infrastructure network to ensure smooth, safe and smooth traffic. The maintenance and repair of works under the capital source of traffic and road maintenance are carried out according to the set plan.

Can Tho City focuses on investing in completing the transport infrastructure in a synchronous and modern direction. Thereby, not only increasing the connection between localities but also forming regional links, creating a driving force to attract investment, opening up space for socio -economic development. As a professional agency, Mr. Tran Le Trung, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction of Can Tho City, said: Currently, the city is implementing investment procedures for key projects in the city to turn the city into a growth pole, playing the role of a driving force for development, spreading, leading the whole region and being the center of the region in terms of trade, tourism, and logistics. The Department of Construction is coordinating with the Department of Finance, the consulting unit to adjust the city's planning, including adjusting the planning and development plan for transport infrastructure and urban infrastructure with a number of key tasks.

Accordingly, the city identifies key traffic axes of the three localities after the merger, in order to meet the needs of developing traffic infrastructure to ensure regional and regional connectivity; conveniently connecting the expressway and national highway network; connecting industrial parks such as the Western beltway connecting National Highway 80 with National Highway 61C, in which the orientation is to extend to Tran De port (including the section coinciding with the South Hau River from Cai Cui port to Tran De Economic Zone); studying the route connecting from National Highway 61C to National Highway 61 in combination with the Cai Tac bypass; adjusting the planning of the coastal road route to complete implementation before 2030 according to the Prime Minister 's direction; studying the route connecting from Can Tho International Airport to expressways in the region.

The Department of Construction will advise the City People's Committee to coordinate with the Ministry of Construction and central ministries and branches to deploy investment in the city's development driving projects such as the Can Tho 2 Bridge project, the O Mon Bridge project; items of the Tran De offshore seaport project; advise on the deployment of technical infrastructure after the port to gradually form logistics service centers and seaport services; research and invest in overpass and underpass systems to solve traffic congestion in the city.

Speed up project progress

The Department of Construction is being assigned as the investor of two key traffic projects of the city. However, the progress of the two projects is behind schedule. In particular, the Western Ring Road project of Can Tho City (section from National Highway 91 to National Highway 61C) has exceeded the total investment. The project to build and upgrade the expansion of Provincial Road 923 has only handed over 42.3% of the site but is not continuous, affecting the progress of the project. Currently, the contractor has mobilized equipment, but has had to stop working for many months, waiting for the site. To speed up the project's progress, the Department of Construction proposed that the City People's Committee direct the City Land Fund Development Center and related units, the People's Committee of Phong Dien Commune and the People's Committee of Phuoc Thoi Ward, to urgently coordinate to organize the implementation of site clearance procedures to implement the construction.

According to the assessment of the City Department of Construction, in the city, the road surface of the provincial road system is mainly asphalt road surface that has been put into operation for many years in extreme weather conditions, leading to difficult quality assurance, requiring continuous repair, affecting the quality of exploitation and socio-economic development of the locality. Through preliminary calculations, the cost to implement the maintenance plan for the national highway and provincial road system in the city in 2026 is about 700 billion VND; of which, maintenance of national highways is about 320 billion VND and maintenance of provincial roads and waterways is about 380 billion VND. To ensure a stable and safe road surface, the Department of Construction recommends that the City People's Committee consider allocating sufficient capital for implementation in 2026. In the long term, the Department of Construction recommends that the City People's Committee consider allowing the implementation of the project to renovate the entire road surface of the provincial road system or develop a 5-year plan to complete the renovating of the road surface of the provincial road system.

Regarding the orientation in the last months of 2025, Mr. Tran Le Trung, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction of Can Tho City, said: The Department of Construction synchronously deploys solutions to accelerate the progress of key traffic projects invested by the Department of Construction. Timely advise or resolve difficulties of investment projects in the transport sector according to its authority, in order to accelerate the implementation progress and disbursement of public investment capital plans according to the direction of the Central Government and the city. Carry out regular maintenance and periodic repairs of national and provincial highways according to the set plan, ensuring the disbursement of 100% of the estimated traffic career capital and road maintenance capital sources assigned by competent authorities. In which, focusing on additional projects, the City People's Committee has just approved the adjustment of the list in October 2025.

At a recent working session with the Department of Construction of Can Tho City, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, requested the Department of Construction to review the existing traffic infrastructure system, on that basis, propose upgrading and expanding it in accordance with the population size and economic development speed of the locality. In addition, pay attention to the development of traffic infrastructure; carry out the management, maintenance and repair of safe and smooth traffic infrastructure. The Department of Construction coordinates with the Management Board of Can Tho Export Processing and Industrial Zones to build a traffic system connecting expressways, national highways... with industrial parks in the city.
