For a long time, the freshwater communes of Tran Van Thoi district such as Khanh Hung, Khanh Hai, Khanh Binh Tay, Khanh Loc, Khanh Binh Dong have been famous for their natural freshwater fish resources. These communes are considered the "capitals" of freshwater fish because of their year-round freshwater conditions, suitable for fish to grow and develop. However, freshwater fish resources are facing the risk of depletion and gradual decline due to year-round exploitation, in an exhaustive manner, with many different methods such as electrocution, spreading three-layer nets, using nets to catch young fish, placing traps, traps, or fishing... in addition to the use of pesticides to kill pests and snails, which unintentionally affect the growth and development of freshwater fish. In addition, unusual changes in weather and climate change cause drought, exposing the bottom of ponds and rivers, causing the source of young fish to decline severely.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Phoi, Don Dong hamlet, Khanh Loc commune, after retiring, returned to his hometown to grow 3 hectares of rice fields to earn daily income. Worried about how to preserve and rebuild the fish resources as before, he thought and did, along with growing rice fields, he kept a part of the ponds and ponds around the fields, in addition to storing water for irrigation in the dry season, these ponds are used to grow water lilies, raise freshwater fish such as snakehead fish, giant perch, sea perch, snakehead fish, snakehead fish, etc. Mr. Phoi shared: "I myself want to protect the freshwater fish resources, I also mobilize people, friends, and relatives to raise them to preserve and regenerate the freshwater fish resources. I see that since Directive 17 was issued, the protection of freshwater fish resources has had effective changes."
Mr. Nguyen Trong Phoi with the model of raising freshwater fish that he successfully applied: above is cultivation, below is effective conservation of freshwater fish.
Sharing the same passion for breeding and preserving freshwater fish, Mr. Quach Van Hy, Hamlet 7 Nho, Khanh Binh Dong Commune, is growing 7 hectares of fields with various types of plants: bitter melon, cucumber, squash, luffa... In addition, he dug 5 ponds around to store fresh water for irrigation; during the rainy season, when fish spawn in large numbers in the fields, he sets up traps to catch young fish and releases them into these ponds, taking advantage of the snails around his house as food for the fish; when the fish are mature, they will find their own food to adapt to the environment. According to Mr. Hy, the cases of fish catching and illegal fishing, which used to occur frequently, have now decreased significantly.
Mr. Hy shared: “In reality, in the season, everyone jostles to exploit, such as setting traps, pulling curtains, spreading nets, and cutting, destroying the freshwater fish resources. In that situation, I want to contribute to preserving freshwater fish resources, first of all to improve my family's meals, and then to create a fixed mold for a separate area to raise fish for easy management. I hope that in the future, people will join hands to preserve, to create a safe, large area for freshwater fish to develop.”
Passionate about preserving freshwater fish, Mr. Quach Van Hy grows crops around the area, digs ponds below to store water for irrigation and to raise freshwater fish, and grows water lilies to increase his income.
