The 24th ASEAN Climate Outlook Forum took place in Phnom Penh, focusing on heatwaves and public health. The event was attended by climate experts from ASEAN member states and representatives from the World Meteorological Organization, the ASEAN Special Meteorological Centre, the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System, the UK Meteorological Office (UKMO), etc.
Speaking at the opening of the forum, Cambodian Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology Thor Chetha said that ASEAN has emerged as a hotspot for impacts caused by climate change such as floods, droughts and heat waves.
He stressed the importance of research and understanding of climate as well as identifying the root causes of natural phenomena to deal with the risks of climate change in the long term.
“Countries in the region need to work together to exchange data, technology and knowledge to address climate challenges,” the minister asserted. Regional cooperation will “allow for more accurate predictions, better understanding of climate change and appropriate responses to natural phenomena, both present and future.”

According to the head of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology of Cambodia, climate change remains a major concern, directly impacting urban development, economic growth and social progress. Noting that climate disruptions hinder multi-sectoral development efforts, he expressed confidence that the outcomes of the 24th ASEAN Climate Outlook Forum will serve as a foundation for developing specific strategic plans within each sector and among stakeholders to combat, mitigate and adapt to climate change.
ASEAN consists of 10 member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
