This is an important step forward, helping to improve professional capacity and provide more safe and effective treatment options for patients in and outside Quang Tri province.
Doctors from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital directly assisted doctors from Quang Tri General Hospital in performing percutaneous laser lithotripsy using an endoscope and angiography for patient Bui Van L., residing in Khe Sanh commune, after being diagnosed with intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct stones.
After more than 2 hours of intervention, all of the patient's gallstones were removed with a fairly gentle, painless procedure.

During this process, the doctor uses X-rays to observe inside the body, to ensure complete removal of gallstones without the need for open surgery as before.
A small incision is made in the skin to insert a needle into the bile duct or gallbladder. The doctor then injects an iodinated contrast dye into the bile duct to locate the stone causing the blockage.
The stones will be crushed under the influence of laser and removed with a stone removal tool or will be washed through the Oddi sphincter to fall into the intestine.
The stone-free rate of this technique is up to 95-97%, even with large stones, stones in difficult locations, and stones molded in the biliary tract.
“Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is the most advanced treatment method currently in the treatment of gallstones. Each new technique deployed not only represents the development of the hospital's expertise and techniques, but also brings joy and motivation for the hospital's doctors and medical staff to examine and treat patients better and better. The greatest joy is to bring modern medical technical services to serve and care for the people's health,” said specialist doctor II Phan Xuan Nam.
