After two defeats against Pohang Steelers (2-4) and Urawa Red Diamonds (0-6), Hanoi FC is determined to find its first point in the AFC Champions League with an away match against Wuhan Three Towns, taking place at 7:00 p.m. on October 24.
Although they only have 1 point after 2 matches, Wuhan team made a strong impression when they drew with Urawa and only lost to Pohang with one less player.
The Chinese representative quickly showed their strength when they rushed to attack right after the opening whistle in the match against Hanoi FC. Coach Le Cong Tuan arranged the team with a defensive orientation to prioritize a clean sheet, while the goal-scoring task was assigned to the duo Van Quyet and Joel Tagueu.
Tagueu was sent off after a high tackle.
Hanoi Club fiercely resisted
However, Hanoi FC's defensive counter-attack plan "failed" in the 4th minute, when Tagueu was sent off. The striker who used to play for Cameroon received a straight red card after a high tackle on a Wuhan defender, forcing his teammates into a 10-on-11 situation for most of the official match time.
With only 10 players, Hanoi FC had to retreat the entire squad to their home field to defend. Coach Le Cong Tuan's players were still able to defend the area well and had some notable attacks.
However, Wuhan FC's pressure brought the opening goal in the 45th minute. Receiving a cross from his teammate on the left wing, Wei Shihao jumped high to head the ball, forcing goalkeeper Van Chuan to dive to save. However, Shihao was there at the right time to stretch and shoot from close range, helping Wuhan FC take the lead.
Van Xuan missed the opportunity
3 minutes after conceding the goal, Hanoi FC had a good chance to equalize. Defender Van Xuan rushed past Wuhan defender to face goalkeeper Liu Dianzuo. He passed the goalkeeper and shot, but the home player was able to retreat and make a spectacular clearance on the goal line.
In the second half, Wuhan Club increased the pressure, focusing on the left wing to create opportunities. Hanoi Club stood firm for about 20 minutes thanks to the talent of Van Chuan. The goalkeeper of U.23 Vietnam continuously saved, helping the away team prevent many dangerous finishing situations of Wuhan.
However, with suffocating pressure, the home team still found a goal to double the gap thanks to Markao in the 64th minute. Wuhan's striker fought fiercely in the air to defeat goalkeeper Van Chuan.
With the safety advantage, Wuhan FC played cautiously, keeping the match's tempo at a moderate level. Meanwhile, despite wanting to push forward to score, Hanoi FC encountered many difficulties. Although they managed to rekindle hope in the 87th minute when Tuan Hai broke through and finished strongly, defeating goalkeeper Liu Dianzuo, the remaining time was not enough for the away team to come back and score.
Coach Le Cong Tuan's players accepted defeat with a score of 1-2. Thus, after 3 matches in the AFC Champions League, Hanoi FC is still at the bottom of the table with 0 points, scoring 3 goals, conceding 12. In the next match taking place in early November, Van Quyet and his teammates will face Wuhan FC again at My Dinh Stadium.
