Meta – the technology corporation that manages the two most popular social networking platforms, Facebook and Instagram – in Vietnam has just shared some ways to help users identify some common online scams during Tet.
According to Meta, the increase in shopping and exchange activities during Tet through digital platforms also creates opportunities for more online scams to occur.
To help the community stay alert to potential scams on its platforms, Meta has outlined some common scams and ways to avoid them to ensure online safety for users in Vietnam.
Meta's recommendations to users to avoid online scams
Typically, there are 3 types of scams during Tet related to: electronic lucky money, advertising cheap Tet food and cheap air and train tickets.
As for electronic lucky money, scammers have taken advantage of this form of lucky money to impersonate the victims' acquaintances and send virtual electronic lucky money via social networks or messaging platforms.
If users click on the links, they may unwittingly provide personal information and become victims of phishing. To avoid falling victim to this trick, users should verify the identity of the sender before accepting these red envelopes.
Digital content creators make videos to educate users on how to recognize scams
During Tet, bad guys take advantage of the high demand for travel but often high ticket prices to offer attractive promotions for plane or train tickets. To avoid becoming a victim, users should book tickets directly through official sales channels and reputable companies.
Another form of fraud that is also flourishing is taking advantage of the time when consumers have little time to shop for Tet and book year-end parties to advertise fake cheap goods and services.
To prevent online fraud during Tet, Meta recommends users set up 2-factor authentication to protect online accounts and reduce the risk of unauthorized account access.
Users need to authenticate before sending money or personal information on digital platforms.
If you spot suspicious posts on Facebook or Instagram, use the reporting feature to help Meta identify and take anti-scam measures.
