Should I eat pig's feet and drink herbs to increase milk production?

VnExpressVnExpress12/02/2024

I just gave birth to my first child and was advised to eat a lot of pig's feet, drink vằng tea, and drink herbs to increase milk production. Is this true? (Mai Anh, Ho Chi Minh City)

Food and drinks have almost no effect in increasing milk production. Some types are effective but only contribute very little to help produce milk. Many mothers have applied all the folk methods to increase milk production, but still do not have enough milk for their children. Only when they hold their children to breastfeed a lot or pump enough times will their milk gradually increase.

Pig's feet, dog's feet, goat's feet or any animal's feet do not increase milk production, but instead provide too much fat, making it easy for the mother to gain weight, making it difficult to return to her pre-pregnancy figure. Gaining too much weight also increases the risk of chronic diseases in the future such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high blood fat...

Herbal drinks, green tea... help make your appetite better than drinking plain water. Don't expect too much from these drinks to help increase your milk supply, because your body will produce milk based on your baby's needs, not based on the foods you eat.

If you want to have enough milk for your baby, breastfeed exclusively. If for some reason you cannot breastfeed directly, you need to pump enough times to match your baby's feedings.
