Colombian authorities announced that they will destroy and sterilize part of drug lord Escobar's hippopotamus herd to control their numbers.
The hippos began to breed and thrive, with many of them moving beyond the ranch's boundaries. Colombia's Environment Ministry declared the hippos an invasive species last year and opened the door to culling.

Escobar’s hippos roamed the wetlands of Colombia’s northwestern Antioquia region. The herd thrived because of its lack of natural predators, favorable weather conditions, and abundant food and water. Colombian officials estimate there are 169 hippos in the Magdalena River Delta, which runs through Antioquia. Without control, the population could reach 1,000 by 2035.
Colombia has tried several options, including sterilization and transferring the hippos to zoos abroad, but has failed to curb the population. Animal activists say sterilization causes pain and endangers veterinarians.
