Construction of two large bridges across the Red River began, celebrating the 71st anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day

The Tran Hung Dao and Thuong Cat Bridge projects were started on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day, contributing to completing the traffic network and expanding Hanoi's urban space.

On the afternoon of October 9, the Hanoi People's Committee held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Tran Hung Dao Bridge project - one of 18 road bridges across the Red River included in the Capital's Transport Development Plan to 2030, with a vision to 2050. This is a key project deployed on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2025) and to welcome the 18th Hanoi Party Congress, towards the 14th National Party Congress.

According to Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan, the Tran Hung Dao bridge project has a total investment of nearly 16,000 billion VND, with the starting point at the intersection of Tran Hung Dao - Tran Thanh Tong - Le Thanh Tong (in Cua Nam and Hai Ba Trung wards), the end point connecting with Nguyen Son street (Long Bien and Bo De wards).

The bridge route is nearly 4.2 km long, of which the main bridge is 870 m long, consisting of 6 spans divided into 2 links, the steel arch structure bears the infinity symbol. The two approach bridges are about 1,150 m long, using prestressed reinforced concrete box girder structure and hollow slab girder. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Vice Chairman Duong Duc Tuan emphasized that the investment in the construction of Tran Hung Dao Bridge is of great significance in promoting the urbanization process, population dispersion and reducing traffic pressure in the central area; at the same time, connecting traffic axes along the two banks of the Red River, reducing the load on Chuong Duong and Vinh Tuy bridges.

The project also contributes to completing the capital's transport infrastructure network, expanding modern urban space on both sides of the bridge, strengthening regional connectivity between Hanoi and the eastern and northeastern provinces, supporting the city's GDP growth target of 8% or more in 2025.

Giving the order to start construction, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh requested the Hanoi People's Committee and relevant units to direct strongly, ensuring safety, quality, progress and investment efficiency. He requested the parties to develop a scientific and detailed construction plan, and organize safe and smooth traffic throughout the implementation process.

Previously, on the morning of October 8, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan also issued the order to start construction of Thuong Cat Bridge project - a key traffic project to celebrate the Capital Liberation Day.

According to Mr. Ngo Ngoc Van, Director of the Hanoi Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board, the Thuong Cat Bridge project and the roads at both ends of the bridge have a total investment of more than 7,302 billion VND, expected to be completed in 2027. The starting point of the project is at Km3+504 (Ky Vu Street, Thuong Cat Ward), the end point is at Km8+731 (intersection with National Highway 23B, Thien Loc Commune). The bridge is permanently designed with reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete, cable-stayed structure, the total length of the bridge and approach roads is 5.226 km, of which the main bridge is 780 m long.

After completion, Thuong Cat Bridge will have 8 lanes (6 motor lanes, 2 rudimentary lanes), the main bridge width is 35 m, the approach bridge is 31 m. The southern approach road (Bac Tu Liem district) has a cross-section of 60 m, the northern approach road (Dong Anh district) is 50 m. The project will complete the traffic network north of the Red River, contributing to the formation of Ring Road 3.5, increasing connectivity between the Northwest region and the center of Hanoi, while reducing the load on Ring Road 3, promoting socio -economic development and forming new urban areas in the area.

According to the Hanoi Transport Development Plan approved by the Prime Minister, the capital will have 17 bridges across the Red River. To date, 8 bridges have been built, including: Long Bien, Chuong Duong, Thanh Tri, Vinh Tuy (phase 1 and 2), Thang Long, Nhat Tan and Vinh Thinh. Hanoi is deploying and preparing to build 9 new bridges, including Thuong Cat, Van Phuc, Hong Ha, Me So, Tu Lien, Tran Hung Dao, New Thang Long, Ngoc Hoi and Phu Xuyen.
