Technology October 22: Netflix increases use of AI, YouTube protects users' faces

Netflix and YouTube simultaneously launched new AI technology, opening up two opposing directions: One side accelerates innovation, the other side tightens control over digital identity.

Netflix pushes forward with AI applications

In its latest quarterly financial report, Netflix announced that it is ready to take advantage of advances in generative AI. While it does not use AI as a platform for content, Netflix sees it as a tool to help creators improve their work efficiency.

“AI can give creators better tools, but it can’t make someone a good storyteller if they’re not one,” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos emphasized. Netflix believes AI will help tell stories faster, better, and in new ways.

Netflix used generative AI to create the building collapse scene in the Argentine film “The Eternaut.” Additionally, “Happy Gilmore 2” used AI to de-age characters, while “Billionaires' Bunker” used AI to visualize costume and set designs.

Despite Netflix's optimism, many artists worry that AI could negatively impact their jobs, especially if AI models are trained on non-consensual data. Some studios are leaning toward using AI for special effects rather than replacing actors.

YouTube officially deploys AI image recognition technology

YouTube has launched image recognition technology for creators in its Partner Program, after a period of testing, that allows users to request the removal of AI-generated content that uses their image or voice.

New technology helps detect and regulate AI videos that use creators' faces or voices without consent. The goal is to prevent impersonation to promote products or spread misinformation.

To get started, creators need to visit the “Likeness” tab, consent to data processing, scan a QR code with their phone to verify their identity through a photo of their ID and a short selfie video. Once permission is granted, they can view flagged videos and submit takedown requests based on privacy or copyright policies.

Users can choose to archive videos, request removal, or withdraw them from the system at any time. If withdrawn, YouTube will stop scanning the video after 24 hours.

OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas Browser

OpenAI is officially joining the AI browser race with the launch of ChatGPT Atlas – an AI-powered browser, now available on macOS and coming soon to Windows, iOS, and Android. CEO Sam Altman calls this a “once-in-a-decade” opportunity to redefine how people interact with webventurebeat.com.

Atlas allows users to chat directly with the browser instead of just typing in a URL. The main interface of Atlas is similar to ChatGPT, with dialog boxes and question suggestions. ChatGPT can read the content of the web page and answer the user's questions right there.

Users can import data from Chrome or Safari to create “memories” for Atlas, which the browser uses to personalize suggestions. However, the memory feature is not perfect – there are cases where Atlas doesn’t recognize a search history that has been performed multiple times.

Atlas supports “AI agents” that can perform tasks directly in the browser, like creating shopping lists from recipes and initiating orders. However, this feature is currently only available to ChatGPT Business, Plus, and Pro users.

Atlas is OpenAI’s first step in competing with Chrome, Perplexity’s Comet, and Opera, all of which are already incorporating AI. While Atlas doesn’t completely reinvent the browser, it does offer a fresh approach and promises more improvements in the future.

InterSystems and Google Cloud join forces to build a real-time medical AI platform

InterSystems has partnered with Google Cloud to integrate the HealthShare platform into Google's healthcare API. The goal is to build a scalable, real-time data platform that supports generative and agent AI applications.

The partnership aims to address fragmented and inconsistent healthcare data. InterSystems provides connectivity, data standardization, and patient authentication, while Google Cloud provides secure infrastructure, AI analytics, and powerful search capabilities.

The integration creates a FHIR-compliant data environment that supports clinical, research, and operational decision-making. Healthcare organizations can use Gemini AI models on Google's Vertex AI platform to improve public health, support decision-making, and automate administrative tasks.
