The head of the FFF denied the possibility of Zidane taking over the French team. |
Zidane has been rumored to replace Didier Deschamps after the 2026 World Cup. Zizou left Real Madrid in 2021 and has repeatedly turned down many offers, leading the public to believe that he is waiting for the right time to lead Les Bleus.
However, the head of the FFF surprisingly denied this possibility. He told L'Équipe : "Many things can happen, and maybe not in the way people predict. I have always had great respect for Zidane, both for what he has brought to French football and for his illustrious coaching career. But everything has to be at the right time. At the moment, we are only focused on the World Cup."
Diallo also revealed that the announcement of Deschamps’ successor could take place before the 2026 World Cup, rather than after the tournament. According to him, the FFF has two prime time slots: after the World Cup ends, or earlier, around March or April 2026, to avoid disrupting the preparation period before the tournament.
Deschamps confirmed that he will leave the head coach position in January this year, ending his 14-year journey leading the national team. The 57-year-old coach led France to the 2018 World Cup, reached the final of Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup, becoming the longest-serving coach in the history of "Les Bleus".
With Mr. Diallo's statement, Zidane's future in the French team is becoming more unpredictable than ever.
