Veteran Le Van Son introduces how to grow areca nuts
Economic development efforts
After serving in the army, veteran Le Van Son (born in 1967, residing in Hiep Nghia quarter, Tan Ninh ward, Tay Ninh province) returned to his hometown to build his family's economy. Despite facing many difficulties and challenges, thanks to his training in the military environment, he was determined not to give up in the face of difficulties, and tried to find ways to develop the family's economy.
Initially, with 8 hectares of land, he planted cassava, custard apples and then lemons, but the results were not promising. Learning from books, newspapers and experienced teammates, in 2000, he decided to switch to growing areca trees. He experimented with planting 800 trees, after more than 4 years, areca trees began to yield harvests. At that time, although the price was not high (about 15,000 VND/kg), he realized that growing areca trees required little care, no need to spray pesticides, and not much capital, only fertilizing once a year; during the harvest season, traders came to buy, no need to worry about finding a market, so he continued to invest capital to expand the area.
To date, he has bought more land, cultivating 1.5 hectares with about 1,500 areca trees. In addition, Mr. Son also planted 200 dwarf coconut trees. His family's income is increasingly stable.
Veteran Le Van Son shared: “When I decided to change crops, I had to think and consider a lot, and my friends and relatives also discouraged me. However, I boldly tried, determined to apply science and technology in the process of taking care of the trees. Thanks to the areca garden, my family escaped poverty, and our house is more spacious.”
Head of the Veterans Association of Hiep Nghia Quarter, Tan Ninh Ward, Ho Truc Bach, said: “On holidays and Tet, Mr. Le Van Son often donates gifts and helps veteran members in difficult circumstances and families with meritorious services. He also actively participates in local movements and activities.”
"We are soldiers, if we see anyone in difficulty, we will help them."
“Uncle Ho’s soldiers in wartime as well as in peacetime, when we see someone in difficulty, we help them.” Those are the words of veteran Nguyen Van Hiep (born in 1962, residing in Long Binh quarter, Hoa Thanh ward, Tay Ninh province).

Veteran Nguyen Van Hiep fixes electricity for a poor local family
Mr. Hiep said that in 1984, he was discharged from the army and returned to his hometown to build up his family's economy. Initially, he and his family faced many difficulties, but fortunately, with the help of local people, comrades and teammates, the family's economy gradually stabilized.
As life improved, he was determined to find ways to support the less fortunate, especially veterans in difficult circumstances.
Working as a home electrician, whenever a veteran, Agent Orange victim or a policy family in the locality is given a house to build, Mr. Nguyen Van Hiep always asks the local government and the Ward Veterans Association to install the entire electrical system in the house 100% free of charge. He also supports the electrical wires, switches, electrical outlets, and sometimes even gives the family an electric fan and rice cooker.
Veteran Huynh Van Tien, residing in Long Binh neighborhood, shared: "Not only does he help comrades, teammates, and families with meritorious services, but when there are difficult cases in the locality with electrical problems, Mr. Hiep always helps wholeheartedly, without taking any payment"./.
