Man City sent a strong squad to the tournament, including England U16 players, such as center back Dante Headley, Leke Drake and Oliver Tevenan. The Daily Mail once considered Headley the best young player born in 2007 in England, and Drake was valued at nearly $600,000 when he was only 13 years old. The English club also included Regan Heskey - son of famous striker Emile Heskey.

PVF also sent the strongest squad of the 2007-2008 generation, with strikers Nguyen Le Phat, Phung Quang Tu and Le Minh Nhat.
The match between the two best young clubs in England and Vietnam ended with a victory for PVF. Doan Huy Long scored at the beginning of each half, while Man City only scored once thanks to Jose Roca.
The Shanghai Rising Star Champions Cup 2023 is a tournament for players born in 2007 and later, taking place in China from August 28 to September 3, with eight participating teams divided into two groups. Group A includes Man City, Ulsan Huyndai, PVF and Aspire (Qatar), Group B includes Shanghai, Cerezo Osaka, Tottenham and Porto.
Man City's youth academy is highly regarded, having won the England U18 and U23 championships for three consecutive seasons. Many Premier League players such as Phil Foden, Kieran Trippier and Jadon Sancho have played for Man City U16.
In addition to Man City, Tottenham are also highly regarded after winning the England U17 Championship. Their squad also has two players promoted to the U20 World Cup squad, Adekunle Adeleke and Theodore Adelusi.

In the opening match, PVF lost 1-2 to Korean representative Ulsan Huyndai on August 28, while Man City drew 1-1 with Aspire. The teams played a round-robin in each group, then played against opponents in the remaining group to determine the order.
In the final match of the group stage, PVF met Aspire on August 31.
